Five Matchups Between Unbeatens in...
In looking at Part I of our South Jersey football games of the week, we have five matchups of unbeaten teams. The season is young, but after Week 3, it will begin to give a better handle on where teams stand.
St. Augustine (3-0) at Millville (2-0), Friday, 6 p.m.
On paper, this looks like a good game, but it's hard to see Millville being able to hang with a St. Augustine team that is averaging 47 points per game. Millville has yet to allow a point in wins over Egg Harbor Township and Kingsway, but St. Augustine provides a much bigger challenge. St. Augustine junior RB Kyle Dobbins has rushed for 511 yards (7.5 avg.) and 4 TDs in leading one of the state's most explosive offenses. St. Augustine won last year's game 33-6.
Clearview (2-0) at No. 2 Timber Creek (2-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
Clearview, which went 4-6 last year, has scored 85 points in its first two games. The Pioneers are up against a team that knows how to score. Timber Creek WR Ezrah Archie has caught 19 passes for 310 yards and five touchdowns. He has committed to Penn and should be an impact player in the Ivy League. Last week Timber Creek needed a 28-21 comeback win over South Jersey's best 0-2 team, Cherokee. Junior Devin Leary is 35 for 57 passing for 662 yards, 10 TDs and one interception.
Pennsville (2-0) at Deptford (2-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
Deptford cashed in on a gutsy call when coach Chris Crowley elected to go for a winning two point conversion against Gateway. Junior Darius Dowd scored the conversion to give the Spartans a 29-28 OT win over Gateway. Dowd has rushed for 293 yards (6.8 avg.) and 3 TDs. The Spartans won an opening 27-20 victory over Penns Grove. Pennsville is the defending SJ Group 1 champion and the Eagles have played great defense, beating Woodstown, 28-7 and Woodbury, 21-6. That game with Woodbury was a rematch of last year's playoff win and the two could see each other again in the postseason. If Deptford wins, would be a major boost to the Spartans' Group 3 playoff chances. Junior Nick Bard has led the strong Pennsville defensive effort. He is averaging 10.5 tackles in the first two wins.
Burlington Twp. (2-0) at Lenape (2-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
This is a key game in the WJFL Capitol Division. Township, which opened with a 42-0 win over Notre Dame, had a key 21-14 victory over Paul VI. Senior RB Drew Price has rushed for 202 yards (5.5 avg.) and 2 TDs. The Falcons can also throw the ball. Rutgers commit Everett Wormley has caught 4 passes for 41 yards and a TD and he is a major big-play performer. Lenape has yet to be challenged, beating Trenton and Egg Harbor Township by a combined 61-7 total.
Cherry Hill West (2-0) at Pennsauken (2-0), Saturday, noon
The winner of this game emerges as a major challenger for the WJFL Constitution Division title. Both teams are among the most improved in South Jersey. West, coming off a 4-5 season, earned an impressive 28-8 win over a Highland team that is favored in the WJFL Royal Division. Pennsauken has already topped its win total of a year ago when the Indians went 1-9. Senior RB Martin Booker Jr. has gotten off to a fast start for Pennsauken. Also a track standout, Booker has rushed for 329 yards (10.3 avg.) and 2 TDs.
