Phillies Bats Fall Flat

Phillies Bats Fall Flat Jimmy Haynes gave a beleaguered Milwaukee bullpen some needed rest. Haynes pitched eight shutout innings leading the Brewers to a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.

Manager Davey Lopes used five relievers for 6 2-3 innings on Tuesday night in Milwaukee`s 14-10, 10-inning win over the Phillies.

"We needed Jimmy to go deep," Lopes said. "He`s been one of our most consistent starters and he keeps getting stronger."

Haynes gave up eight hits, walked none and struck out a season-high nine before leaving after eight innings. Brandon Kolb allowed one run in the ninth inning.

"I wanted to come out and give a good outing but I didn`t dream I`d do this," said Haynes, who had his longest outing since 1998.

Tony Fernandez and Ron Belliard hit solo homers for the Brewers (23-17), who have won five straight games and are six games over .500 for the first time since June 30, 1998.

For the second straight game, the Brewers got off to a strong start. After scoring eight runs in the first two innings Tuesday, the Brewers went ahead 4-0 after two innings on Wednesday.

"I think it helped a lot," said Devon White, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. "It really helped that we jumped out and they didn`t come back. That`s what happens when you get good pitching."

Fernandez hit his first homer of the season in the first off Bruce Chen (1-3) to open the scoring. Jeromy Burnitz also tripled and scored on Jeffrey Hammonds` double. White added a two-run double in the second.

"Bruce didn`t have his good control and he put us in a hole early," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said.

Belliard`s third homer made it 5-0 in the sixth. Fernandez singled and scored on Hammonds` groundout in the ninth.

Chen gave up five runs, seven hits and four walks in seven innings. He struck out seven.

But the left-hander continued to be plagued by the longball, giving up 11 in eight starts. He has given home runs in five straight starts and in seven of eight outings this season.

"He leaves the ball up in the zone a lot but he`s going to mature," White said. "He`s going to get it because he has a good live arm."

Notes:
Philadelphia`s Doug Glanville extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a first-inning single. He also had a single in the eighth to raise his batting average to .380 (19-for-50) during the streak. ... Milwaukee won its first series ever at Veterans Stadium in its four seasons in the National League. ... Chen`s seven strikeouts matched a season high.
