2017 Public High School Report Card ...From the Pages of Suburban Family Magazine...

It’s that time of year when students begin to trade their beach towels for textbooks and with them, a school year full of new teachers, classes and possibilities ahead. But have you ever wondered just how your public high school is shaping up for the 2017-18 school year?

Here at Suburban Family, we care about the schools your children are attending just as if they were our own. That’s why we have compiled our annual Public High School Guide with all of the facts and figures to see how your school compares. Following are the SAT scores, class sizes, student-to-teacher ratios and more in public high schools across three counties, with a special new addition to the mix: the college readiness index. This measures the degree in which students have been exposed to and have passed some collegiate-level material.

Our guide even features a short Q&A with a few of your local administrators to see what your schools are doing to help you succeed this year. But wherever your school may fall, we can tell it’s going to be another stellar year.

“We have our ‘Power of Ten: Skills for Academic Success’ that our counseling department reviews with our freshmen on an individual basis very early in the school year. These suggestions include tips such as how to manage time productively, recovering and learning from setbacks and using technology appropriately.” —Chris Callinan, assistant principal, director of counseling, Cherokee High School

What advice do you give students for juggling their education and social lives?
“Students need to prioritize and schedule their social lives based on their interest and goals. These are not the same for any two students. What I will say is that students need to understand the importance of appropriate social interactions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is essential for achieving one’s academic goals.” —Jeff Spector, principal, Seneca High School

How should students best prepare for the SATs?
“We encourage our students to take full advantage of all the academic resources made available to them at Lenape. … We also offer an SAT Preparation course during instructional day, as well as our SAT enrichment programs throughout the school year and during the summer.” —Tony Cattani, principal, Lenape High School

What is the best time and way to start looking into colleges?
“[It’s] never too soon. [Students] need to find the right fit for [their] career goals. Talk to others who have already started the process, maybe tag along on a college visit.” —Matthew Campbell, principal, Shawnee High School
