South Jersey Football Preview Part II
Pleasantville (3-0) at Holy Spirit (3-1), Friday, 7. What a job Pleasantville coach Chris Sacco has done. He inherited an 0-10 team when he took over in 2015 and that squad also went 0-10. The Greyhounds were 4-6 last season and now they are aiming for a South Jersey Group 2 playoff spot. Junior Mohamed Toure has rushed for 270 yards (9.6 avg.) and 2 TDs. Two of the wins have come over potential SJ Group 1 playoff teams Buena and Schalick. Yet Pleasantville hasn’t faced a team like Holy Spirit. The Spartans are coming off one of the more exciting games of the season, a 43-35 overtime victory over Delsea as quarterback Josh Zamot threw for TD passes and rushed for the game-winning score on a two-yard run. The Spartans trailed 35-21 with under five minutes left in regulation before storming back. Spirit’s lone loss was 42-26 to St. Joseph in a game the Spartans led by as much as two touchdowns. One thing Spirit can’t do is look past Pleasantville, with a showdown against St. Augustine the following week.
Willingboro (2-2) at Holy Cross (3-1), Friday, 7. This is a key WJFL Liberty game. Willingboro lost its first division game to Cinnaminson and must win to keep its realistic division title hopes alive. Holy Cross is 2-0 in the division with wins over Bordentown and Cinnaminson. After losing its second game of the season 38-7 to Haddonfield, Holy Cross has won two in a row following last week’s 14-7 triumph over Florence.
Florence (1-2) at Palmyra (2-2), Friday, 7. This is a key game in the WJFL Freedom Division. Both teams already have one division loss with Florence falling to Burlington City and Palmyra losing to New Egypt. Led by quarterback Taj Harris, Palmyra has an explosive offense. Harris is a Syracuse commit who has big-play running ability. The problem for the Panthers has been the defense, having allowed 110 points in consecutive losses to New Egypt and Penns Grove. Florence has a much better defense and is coming off a 14-7 loss to a high scoring Holy Cross teams.
Winslow Township (1-2) at Seneca (1-2), Friday, 7. Winslow Township had a bye last week after a 38-20 loss to a powerful Camden Catholic team. The Eagles could get themselves in contention for a SJ Group 4 playoff spot with a win over Seneca. Quarterback Prince-dru Bey has thrown for 801 yards and eight touchdowns and has rushed for 134 yards (4.5 avg.) and one score. Senior Isaiah Shaw has caught 17 passes for 391 yards and three TDs. Sophomore LB Marcus Young has a team-high 21 tackles. Seneca had a bye last week after a 30-16 loss to a talented Camden team. The Golden Eagles face Lenape, Camden Catholic and Shawnee the following three weeks, a truly brutal schedule.
