South Jersey Football Games of the Week

Frankly, this is not a great week for classic South Jersey high school football matchups, but there are still some key games as teams jockey for playoff position. Here are the games of the week.

Friday

Egg Harbor Township (4-3) at Seneca (2-3), 6. Egg Harbor Township is very much in the running for a SJ Group 5 playoff berth. The Eagles have won four of their past five after last week’s 33-6 win over Atlantic City. EHT senior Mohamed Soumaworo has rushed for 485 yards (6.7 avg.) and four touchdowns. Classmate Rondell Vaughn Jr. has rushed for 673 yards (6.1 avg.) and six touchdowns. Seneca still is in the running to earn a SJ Group 3 playoff berth. The Golden Eagles are looking to bounce back from an 18-7 loss to Triton.

Clearview (3-3) at Mainland (4-3), 6:30. Both teams are in the running for a Group 4 playoff berth. Clearview is in an almost must-win situation since the Pioneers are currently No. 16 in the SJ Group 4 power rankings. The Pioneers had a bye week after and will be looking to bounce back from a 41-14 loss to Timber Creek. Mainland has won two in a row following last week’s 35-25 win over Vineland

Cedar Creek (7-0) at Winslow Township (5-1), 7. This is clearly South Jersey’s game of the week. Both teams are tied for first place in the WJFL Memorial Division with 3-0 records. Cedar Creek, after going 3-5 last season, is among the most improved teams not only in South Jersey but in the state. The Pirates have outscored teams, 238-21. Cedar Creek senior quarterback Joseph Landicini has thrown for 1,632 yards and 15 touchdowns. Running back Jaquan Howard has rushed for 666 yards (8.0 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. Receiver Jojo Bermudez has 37 receptions for 781 yards and seven touchdowns. Zachary Ricci has made the most of his chances. He has nine receptions for 249 yards and five touchdowns. Winslow Township has won five in a row since an opening 26-14 loss to Woodbridge. Quarterback Hamas Duren has thrown for 1,284 yards and 22 touchdowns. He has rushed for 210 yards (8.1 avg.) and three touchdowns. Trey Thorpe has rushed for 492 yards (5.7 avg.) and two touchdowns. Junior James Wilson Jr. has 19 receptions for 313 yards and six touchdowns. Freshman Cam Miller has 15 receptions for 243 yards and six touchdowns. All signs point to a high scoring game between two explosive offenses.

Saturday

Holy Spirit (3-2) at Woodrow Wilson (3-2), 1. Holy Spirit had last week’s game with St. Augustine postponed until Oct. 29. Spirit’s last game was a 7-6 defeat to Cedar Creek. The Spartans’ other loss was an opening 28-7 loss to Maryland’s DeMatha. Spirit quarterback Trevor Cohen has thrown for 811 yards and 6 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. Junior Gavin Roman has rushed for 382 yards (4.8 avg.) and four touchdowns. Elijah Steward has 24 receptions for 433 yards and six touchdowns. Wilson’s Devin Kargman is among the top quarterbacks in South Jersey. He has thrown for 1,179 yards and 10 touchdowns. Naz’sir Oglesby has rushed for 598 yards (6.0 avg.) and eight touchdowns. Both teams will be in the playoffs but are jockeying for better seeds.
