Braves "Chip" away at Phillies Lead

by 6 ABC - Action News | Jul 4, 2001
Braves Chipper Jones went 4-for-4, hitting two solo homers and scoring a team record-tying five runs as the Atlanta Braves beat Philadelphia 14-7 Tuesday night to move within one game of the NL East-leading Phillies.

B.J. Surhoff`s two-run single keyed an eight-run burst in the seventh inning that put Atlanta ahead 13-5. The Braves stopped Philadelphia`s five-game winning streak. Jones homered in the second and hit his 23rd homer in the eighth. He matched the Atlanta mark, which he already shared, for runs in a game.

Surhoff doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs. Jose Cabrera (5-2) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

Reliever Jose Santiago (0-1) was charged with six hits and six earned runs in one-third of an inning.

With the score tied at 5, Santiago gave up three straight singles to load the bases before Brian Jordan singled off home plate to score Keith Lockhart for the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Surhoff`s single made it 8-5, and Javy Lopez followed with an RBI single for a 9-5 lead.

Randy Wolf relieved Santiago but immediately gave up a two-run double to pinch-hitter Wes Helms and a two-run single to Rafael Furcal.

The eight-run seventh was the Braves` most prolific inning since April 18, 1999, when they scored 10 times in the ninth inning of a 20-5 win at Colorado.

Philadelphia, swept in a three-game series by the Braves on June 25-27, gave up three unearned runs in the sixth, ruining Robert Person`s bid to win his third straight start.

Person, who led 5-2, watched Andruw Jones lead off by reaching on an error by shortstop Jimmy Rollins. After Chipper Jones doubled, Brian Jordan had an RBI groundout.

Rico Brogna followed one out later with a two-run double that tied it at 5.

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the second off starter Tom Glavine as Travis Lee hit an RBI double and Marlon Anderson had an RBI groundout.

Following a 1-hour, 30-minute rain delay, Jason Marquis took over in the third for Glavine.

Glavine, winless in his last six starts, watched his ERA rise to 5.86 in his last eight outings. Though the Braves won his previous two starts as Glavine gave up four total earned runs in 13 innings, the left-hander entered 1-3 in his last seven starts.

Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer in the Phillies` ninth.

Notes: Marquis, who made his 20th relief appearance, was scheduled to make his fifth start on Saturday at Boston. ... Glavine entered 20-8 with a 3.42 ERA in 38 career starts against the Phillies. ... Santiago`s ERA rose from 1.86 to 4.58.
