South Jersey Football Games of the Week

Friday Sept. 5

Kingsway (1-0) at Camden (1-0), 6 p.m. This is an interdivisional game between two teams coming off impressive wins. Camden started the season in style by winning 28-0 at Martinsburg, West Virginia—snapping a 27-game win streak. Freshman Gregory Wyche threw three touchdown passes. This win showed what most thought: that Camden will be a serious contender in Group 2. Now the Panthers take on a Group 5 Kingsway team that opened with a 20-7 win at Donovan Catholic. Kingsway senior David Oravetz completed 13 of 15 for 236 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions to lead the Dragons. Classmate Christian White had five receptions for 101 yards and a TD. Kingsway, while not being a Group 5 favorite, should certainly be a playoff team.

Pitman (0-1) at Sterling (1-0), 6 p.m. The is the opening WJFL Royal Division game for both teams. The defending champion is Pitman, which opened with a 34-14 win over Woodstown, which should remain one of the better teams in Group 1 (although defending state champion Glassboro is by far the team to beat in Group 1). Sterling appears improved from last year’s 4-6 edition. The Silver Knights opened this season with a 45-0 win over Buena.

St. Augustine (1-0) at Paul VI (1-0), 7 p.m. St. Augustine opened with a 24-14 win at Ohio’s McKinley High. Defensive end Damari Simeon, playing in the same state he will in college as an Ohio State commit, had two sacks to lead the defensive effort. Junior Roman Coney led the offensive attack by rushing for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Paul VI opened with a 34-8 win over Timber Creek. Senior Daulton Phalines completed 9 of 14 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. The key is how Paul VI can get pressure against a highly touted offensive line from St. Augustine.

Saturday Sept. 6

Audubon (0-0) at Paulsboro (1-0), 11 a.m. This may not be the most competitive game, but at halftime Paulsboro is naming the field after distinguished graduate Glenn Howard, who was a standout football player and went on to win 316 games as the head coach. It’s quite an honor and well deserved. As for Audubon, the Green Wave are coming off a 3-7 record. The Green Wave have one of the top defensive linemen in South Jersey, senior Jonah Jordan, who had 10 tackles for loss. Paulsboro, coming off an 8-3 season, is expected to challenge rival West Deptford for the WJFL Patriot Division. The Red Raiders opened with last week’s 33-6 win over Penns Grove as quarterback Malakhai McKenzie threw two touchdown passes and ran for another.
