A Dominant Postseason Ends a Season To Remember For Gloucester Catholic Girls’ Basketball
It was a convincing conclusion to a dominant postseason for the Gloucester Catholic girls’ basketball team.

Gloucester Catholic won its first state title since 1983 after scoring a 62-39 victory over Gil St. Bernard in the NJISAA state Non-Public B championship. It was the 10th state title in the program’s rich history.

Gloucester Catholic coach Lisa Gedaka has now completed the difficult double of being a player and a head coach of a state championship team. She won three state titles as a player at Gloucester Catholic.

The Rams have been knocking at the door and this season they simply crashed it in. Just last year Gloucester Catholic won the South Jersey Non-Public B title but saw its season end with a 41-30 loss to Montclair Immaculate in the title game.

This year the Rams won the state title in convincing fashion, continuing a postseason trend.

Gloucester Catholic won its four playoff games by an average of 31.7 points.

The closest postseason game was a 44-31 victory over Rutgers Prep in the South Jersey Non-Public B championship.

Senior forward Jahzara Green, among the top players in the state, led the Rams with 14 points.

Green, who is a St. Joseph’s commit, had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the championship effort. Classmate Talia Shumate added 15 points for the Rams, who ended the season 26-4.

Other double-figure scorers in the championship game were junior sharp-shooter Amanda Eggers, who had 13 points (hitting four, three-pointers) and senior Jalyn Moore (10 points, four rebounds). Sophomore Monet High contributed a team-high six assists.

Two of Gloucester Catholic’s losses came against the consensus No. 1 team in South Jersey Paul VI. The Rams lost 58-42 in a regular season meeting.

During the rematch, Paul VI earned a classic 57-55 double overtime victory over the Rams in the championship of the South Jersey Basketball Invitational Tournament.

The other losses were an opening night 58-52 loss to Philadelphia Catholic League champion Archbishop Carroll and 41-40 to NJSIAA State Non-Public A champion Red Bank Catholic.

That type of rugged schedule surely led the way for the Rams to win the state title.

Gloucester Catholic won its final nine games of the season, including a 65-26 victory over eventual South Jersey Group 1 champion Wildwood in the Tri-County Conference championship game.

Arguably the top regular season win was 59-36 early January victory over Lenape. That is a Lenape team that went on to win its second Group 4 state title in three years.

In that game, Green had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Shumate added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rams then beat Lenape, 49-46, in a rematch during the SJIBT semifinal. Moore led Gloucester Catholic with 18 points, while Shumate added 12 and Green contributed 10.

All but two of the Gloucester Catholic wins this season were by at least 10 points or more. The other non-double figure win was a 46-41 victory over Bishop Eustace

Green, Moore and Shumate were three seniors who laid the foundation for Gloucester Catholic’s success. They left a winning legacy, taking one of South Jersey’s most successful programs to an even greater level.
