A Major Milestone For Shawnee’s Anderson

A Major Milestone For Shawnee’s Anderson
Brian Anderson always talks about the legendary coaches he got to work under as an assistant and rightly so. Anderson recently became the all-time winningest coach at Shawnee and also earned his 400th career win within a week.

And it’s true that he worked under some of the best coaches in South Jersey history.

Anderson truly paid his dues, coaching three sports for 20 years before then deciding to concentrate on his baseball duties.

In football he worked under Hall of Fame coach Tim Gushue, who is still guiding the team. Anderson was the long-time defensive coordinator.

He was a basketball assistant to Joe Kessler, among the best coaches in South Jersey history, who became the first South Jersey coach to win a Tournament of Champions title.

In baseball, he was an assistant to Brian Gibney, who won 398 games as a head coach in that sport and was also among the best coaches in South Jersey boys’ soccer history.

That is quite a who’s who in coaching. Anderson is building up his own resume, even though he is much more comfortable speaking about the accomplishments of others.

“I got to work with legendary coaches, Brian Gibney, Joe Kessler and Tim Gushue and I was very fortunate to learn from all of them,” Anderson said. “And hopefully, I have figured out a few things because of them.”

He sure has figured things out.

During his career as a head baseball coach, Shawnee has won 13 division titles, two sectional championships and a state title. Shawnee also captured one Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic championship, consisting of the best teams in South Jersey. He has also been the head coach of two Carpenter Cup championships for the Burlington County entry along with one title as an assistant coach of that team.

Anderson’s 2003 team won the Group 4 state title, led by Sean Doolittle, who enjoyed a long Major League career that included two All-Star berths and the 2019 World Series title with the Washington Nationals.

Anderson is doing some of his best work this season. Shawnee began the week 13-7 overall and 5-2 in the highly competitive Olympic Conference American Division, one of the best in the state.

His 400th win was a 1-0 victory over Eastern, which was also a showdown of first place American Division teams. In addition to the American Division race, Shawnee remains a major threat in what should be a highly competitive South Jersey Group 3 playoff bracket.

What makes Anderson’s record more impressive is that it has come while playing one of the most demanding schedules year in and year out.

It might sound like a cliché, but there are zero easy games in the six-team American Division. The non-league schedule has been full of Top 15 South Jersey teams as well.

“I’ve been lucky to have first of all some really good assistant coaches, and we have obviously had some really good players,” Anderson said. “This year is no different and it has been a pleasure doing this.”

One of the players he is coaching this year is his son Cole, a sophomore who is among the better outfielders in South Jersey.

For Anderson it has come full circle from coaching other’s sons to his own. No matter who he has coached, he has considered himself blessed to be associated with Shawnee athletics all these years.

“In baseball there is always the next day, where you’re never sure what’s going to happen, but you’ve got to keep humility,” Anderson said.

He has remained humble, despite overwhelming success, somebody who worked under so many legends who has become one himself.
