A Look at the Eagles Schedule

A Look at the Eagles Schedule
The NFL has released its schedule and the biggest outrage among Eagles fans (or should we say radio sports talk show hosts) is that they are playing on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Other than that, the schedule has its challenges, but the Eagles should be a playoff team and even a Super Bowl contender if new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion can connect with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Each year, NFL teams have to play opponents in two other divisions besides their own. This year the Eagles will play the NFC West (a strong division) and the AFC South (an OK division).

Week 18 at NY Giants, TBD

The Eagles have to play on the two aforementioned holidays, but you won’t find many feeling sorry for the players. This is their livelihood, one that compensates them well (but there is a physical price to pay). The one positive is that the players will get Christmas off. Here is also predicting that the Christmas Eve game, which will be broadcast on Prime Video, will get a strong rating and the NFL will continue to play on this night if it is at all possible.

Tough turnaround. A difficult two-week stretch begins with the Eagles hosting Pittsburgh on a Sunday and then visiting Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Eagles play two Thursday games, but they will have an extra day’s rest on the second one, Christmas Eve at home against Houston. That’s because they play on a Saturday the previous week.

Four straight playoff opponents. The Eagles have four consecutive games against teams that made the playoffs last year. It begins Monday Sept. 28 at Chicago. That is followed by Sunday Oct. 4 vs. LA Rams and Sunday Oct. 11 vs. Jacksonville in London. The Eagles then come back and host Carolina, on Oct. 18. Three of these teams won their division last year and the fourth, the LA Rams, are this year’s early favorite to win the Super Bowl. The only non-division winner is the Rams, who have the best odds to win the Super Bowl, according to BetMGM (+800). The Eagles have a late-season stretch against three playoff teams from last year with the first two at home – Dec. 19 against Seattle and Dec. 24 against Houston. The third team is San Francisco, which hosts the Eagles on Jan. 3.

Facing all division teams in order. The Eagles play their NFC East rivals in three consecutive weeks beginning with Dallas on Monday, Oct. 26 and followed the next week at Washington and the following week home against the NY Giants. We’ll know after this stretch if the Eagles remain the prohibitive favorite to win the NFC East.

No-fly zone. The Eagles won’t have to get on a plane during a six-week period. Beginning Oct.18, the Eagles host Carolina and Dallas in successive weeks. They then visit Washington (likely train ride) return home to host the NY Giants and after a bye, will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 22.
