Eagles Right Now A Difficult Team To Watch
The Philadelphia Eagles are hard to watch these days, in the middle of a four-game losing streak, with starting quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve and really no timetable known whether he will come back this season.
Let’s get to the positive first.
The Eagles are on a four-game losing streak, and aside from the 27-7 debacle on Monday night in Chicago, they have been highly competitive while shorthanded the last three weeks.
Last Sunday they trailed 19-14 after DeVonta Smith caught a 19-yard TD pass from Tanner McKee with 10:42 left in the fourth quarter.
As an aside, even though the Eagles only scored 14 points, one can see how important Smith is to the offense after missing the previous two games due to injury. He had seven receptions for 75 yards and a TD and attracts so much defensive attention that it allows his teammates more room out on the field.
If you were the Eagles, being so shorthanded at home and were within five points with plenty of time left in the fourth quarter, you would have taken this.
Say what you want, but this team has played hard the last three weeks, showing that coach Nick Sirianni hasn’t lost the team.
That is a small consolation, because they play in a weakened division that is there for the taking, despite the injuries, something we emphasized last week.
Sure, they missed Hurts and replacement Tanner McKee didn’t have the best of games, but it has to be remembered that now in his fourth season, this was his first ever meaningful start.
He had two other starts, but they both came in Week 18 of the season when the Eagles were resting their starters as they prepared for the postseason.
Against Carolina he completed 26 of 45 passes (57.8%) for 215 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. His passer rating was just 77.5 and he was sacked three times.
Compare that to Hurts in the previous week’s 19-17 gut-punch of a loss to Jacksonville in England. Hurts completed 21-of-40 passes (52.5%) for 220 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and a 77.1 passer rating with one sack.
Granted, Hurts as we found out was playing injured, but still, other than the first two games (against sub .500 teams Washington and Tennessee), the quarterback play hasn’t been stellar for the Eagles.
There is no doubt the Eagles miss Hurts and did against Carolina, but their problems go much deeper.
With the retirement of Lane Johnson, the ineffectiveness and then trade of Cam Jurgens, the game showed how much the offensive line has regressed.
A team with a great offensive line will cover up other warts, and the Eagles for so long had one of the best units in the NFL. That is far from the case anymore.
One other thing that must be noted – the last three games, the Eagles opponents didn’t play up to their standards. One could make the case that the Eagles should have beaten the LA Rams and Jacksonville. They couldn’t make that case against Carolina, but the Panthers committed 13 penalties for 149 yards and still won, showcasing far from their A-game.
So where do the Eagles go from there?
They host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, a team that is even more disappointing than the Eagles. Who would have thought that both teams would enter the game 2-4?
It might be the least buzz for an Eagles-Cowboys game there has been in a long, long time.
Still, if the Eagles continue to play hard, McKee shows some progression, then they could at least be playing meaningful games for quite some time.
In this sad-sack division, it might not even take a winning record to claim the title.
