South Jersey Girls’ soccer preview
The tournament begins this week and here is a look at the six South Jersey Groups.
South Jersey Group 1
Defending champion: Haddon Township beat Audubon, 4-2 in the final.
Outlook: Haddon Township is the top seed despite taking an 8-9-1 record into the tournament. That said, the Hawks will be difficult to unseat. They had so many losses because they played in the Colonial Conference Liberty Division, where Group 2 contenders Haddonfield and Haddon Heights were the top teams. Wildwood is the second seed and can’t be discounted, but a team to watch is No. 4 seeded Schalick.
South Jersey Group 2
Defending champion: West Deptford beat Haddon Heights, 2-0.
Outlook: Delsea is the top seed and the Crusaders will be a major threat. They played a difficult regular season schedule and that should pay off. The Crusaders advanced to the Coaches Tournament semifinal before losing to Shawnee, 2-0. Junior Adelyn McDonnell is a true finisher with 29 goals entering the tournament. Two teams from the Colonial Conference Liberty Division, No. 2 seed Haddon Heights and No. 3 Haddonfield should be contenders.
South Jersey Group 3
Defending champion: Shawnee beat Moorestown, 2-1 in the final.
Outlook: Shawnee is the top seed and will be difficult to unseat. The Renegades take a 17-1-1 record in the tournament. They have beaten Paul VI and also suffered their only loss to the Eagles, in a 2-1 double overtime loss during the Coaches Tournament championship. Senior Madison Zaun (10 goals) is a proven finisher. No. 2 Central Regional, which lost to Trinity Hall, 1-0 in a Shore Conference semifinal, should be a major factor.
South Jersey Group 4
Defending champion: Cherokee beat Central Regional, 1-0 in the final.
Outlook: Egg Harbor Township is the top seed. and the Eagles should make a serious run. They advanced to the South Jersey Coaches Tournament semifinal before losing to powerful Paul VI, 1-0. That was the Eagles first loss of the season and they took an 18-1 record into the playoffs. Gloucester County Institute of Technology is the No. 2 seed. The Cheetahs lost to Egg Harbor Township in a Coaches Tournament quarterfinal. GCIT should contend. A darkhorse could be defending sectional champion Cherokee, which was hit hard by graduation, but has many impressive young players such as freshman Maddie Conklin, who had five goals and nine assists in the regular season.
South Jersey Non-Public A
Defending champion: Paul VI defeated Trinity Hall, 3-0, in the final.
Outlook: This is a loaded field and Paul VI, which entered the tournament with a 19-1 record, could only earn the No. 3 seed.
That said, the Eagles remain the team to beat after winning the past two state Non-Public A titles. This is a high scoring team, with senior Camryn Koerner scoring a team-high 17 goals in the regular season. Koerner is among five players with double-figure goal totals. Paul VI avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to Shawnee by beating the Renegades, 2-1 in double overtime in the Coaches Tournament championship.
The Eagles should be challenged by two teams from the Shore Conference, top seeded St. John Vianney and No. 2 Red Bank Catholic. During the regular season Red Bank Catholic earned a 2-0 victory over St. John Vianney.
Among the other teams, No. 4 seeded Trinity Hall and No. 7 Immaculata bear watching.
South Jersey Non-Public B
Defending champion: Rutgers Prep beat Princeton Day, 3-0, in the final
Outlook: The highest seeded team from the seven-county South Jersey area is No. 2 Holy Cross Prep. Bishop Eustace earned a No. 4 seed. Defending champ Rutgers Prep is the top seed and will be very difficult to unseat.
