Shawnee’s Gushue To Be Honored By The Philadelphia Eagles
It’s been quite a milestone season for Shawnee football coach Tim Gushue. Now in his 44th season guiding the Renegades, Gushue earned his 300th career win earlier this season with a 35-13 victory over Cherry Hill East.

Gushue has guided Shawnee to nine sectional championships, two in South Jersey Group 3 and seven in South Jersey Group 4.

This year Shawnee is again up to its winning ways with a 5-2 record.

Before last week’s games, Gushue earned another honor as he was named the Philadelphia Eagles High School Tackle Football Coach of the Week.

Gushue and other high school coaches who earned this award this season will be honored at the Eagles home game Dec. 13 against the Indianapolis Colts.

It’s the second time Gushue has earned this honor as the first one came in 2014.

That season, Shawnee went 11-1, won the West Jesey Football League American Division and captured the South Jersey Group 4 title with a 28-7 win over Timber Creek in the championship game.

The 72-year-old Gushue doesn’t feel comfortable being in the spotlight, but he says being honored by the Eagles is something the program can benefit from

“The attention, which is something I am not big on, is good for our program,” Gushue said in a phone interview. “People see the success the program has had.”

Recently, Gushue even generated more positive publicity when he was interviewed by KYW radio’s Matt Leon for the veteran reporter’s podcast.

Gushue, a Shawnee graduate, was interviewed about his coaching career.

“It was a great experience, I went to Philadelphia and was interviewed for about an hour, it was really good because people get to see all the success the program has achieved.”

One of Gushue’s favorite memories concerning the Eagles occurred several years ago when he was invited to a football camp as part of Philadelphia Eagles Alumni Day.

Gushue was invited by former Eagles quarterback Joe Piscarcik, who son, Jake, was playing at Shawnee at the time.

During the camp, Eagles legend Brian Dawkins pulled Gushue aside and said something that has he will always remember.

“Brian Dawkins thanked me for what I was doing,” Gushue said. “He said that outside of his dad, his high school coach was the most influential person in his life. You don’t know how meaningful and personal it was for me.”

That was the first time Gushue ever met Dawkins, but the fact that a current NFL Hall of Fame player took the time to express this opinion, really made an impact on the veteran coach.

It got him thinking that over the years, that the positive impact he has had on youngsters is even more important than all of the W’s.

And that is a main reason why Gushue has no plans to slow down.

“I love going to work every day,” he said. “There is nothing like being with the kids.”
