South Jersey Football Games of the Week
There are some of the greatest matchups this week, including two games between defending state champions. Here is a look at the South Jersey football games of the week.
Thursday
Millville (4-2, 2-1 WJFL American) at Atlantic City (3-3, 1-1), 6
This could be a South Jersey Group 4 playoff preview as both teams have the ability to win a sectional championship and beyond. Millville has been highly competitive while playing against some of the top teams in South Jersey. The Thunderbolts handed St. Augustine its only loss of the season and also suffered a 21-20 loss to unbeaten Rancocas Valley. Last week the Thunderbolts beat Mainland, 38-0. QB Robert O’Connor has thrown for 1,165 yards and 13 touchdowns. Atlantic City has won two in a row since a 21-19 loss to unbeaten defending state Group 5 champion Washington Township. Junior Marvin Burroughs has thrown for 926 yards and 13 TDs.
Friday
Camden (4-2, 3-0 WJFL Classic) at Glassboro (6-1, 3-0), 6
This is a battle of defending state champions. Glassboro has won the last two state Group 1 titles while Camden was last year’s state Group 2 champion. Both have moved up a Group this year, with Glassboro in Group 2 and Camden in Group 3. In addition, the winner will clinch at least a share of the Classic Division title. Camden is coming off last week’s 50-14 win over Kingsway, a week after a 28-13 loss at Permian, Texas. Sophomore running back Jayden Boyce rushed for 161 yards and four TDs against Kingsway and has rushed for 761 yards and eight touchdowns this year. Glassboro has won four in a row since a 21-7 loss to Winslow Township. Senior Xavier Sabb, one of the top receivers in the country, has 48 receptions for 664 yards and seven touchdowns.
Winslow Township (4-2, 1-2 WJFL American) at Washington Township (6-0, 7-0, 3-0), 6
This is another game matching defending state champions. Winslow Township won the past two South Jersey Group 4 titles and Washington Township is the defending state Group 5 champion. Adding to the drama is Washington Township senior QB Jalen Parker guided Winslow Township to the past two state titles. Since becoming eligible after his transfer to Washington Township, Parker has thrown for 577 yards and nine touchdowns in three games while rushing for 168 yards and one score. Winslow Township was idle last week after a 31-24 win over highly regarded Red Bank Catholic snapped a two-game losing streak. The highlight of the season for the Eagles was snapping Glassboro’s 29-game win streak with a 21-7 win.
Paul VI (4-1, 2-1 WJFL Constitution) at Seneca (5-2, 2-1), 7
The winner will stay alive in the division race. Seneca is coming off last week’s 49-16 win in Hammonton, its fifth in a row. QB Anthony Tirico threw five TD passes and rushed for two others and went over the 10,000 career yards total. Paul VI had a bye last week after earning its most impressive win of the season, a 35-7 win over Eastern. Running back Nate Klecko has rushed for 707 yards and seven touchdowns for Paul VI.
