South Jersey Football Games of the Week
While there could be many first-round mismatches, there are some good opening round games. Here is a look at some of the expected better first round matchups.

Friday

Central Jersey Group 3

(6) Pleasantville (4-5) at (3) Ocean City (6-3), 6 p.m.

These two were former long-time Thanksgiving opponents. Ocean City is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, losing 35-7 to Holy Spirit and 42-0 to Glassboro last week. Glassboro is one of the top teams in South Jersey. Ocean City senior edge rusher Jack Chapman is among the top defensive linemen in South Jersey. Pleasantville has some of the best game-breaking players including quarterback Takiesse Barnes, a Temple commit and receiver-quarterback Semaj Dozier, who is headed to Virginia Tech. The Greyhounds aren’t a deep team, but if they can spring Dozier, Barnes running back Nazir Griffin or receiver Raliel Wiggins for big plays, this could be an interesting game.

South Jersey Group 5

(5) Eastern (4-5) at (4) Egg Harbor Township (7-2), 6 p.m.

EHT enters the playoffs with a three-game winning streak, including last week’s 29-27 victory over Hammonton that helped clinch a share of the WJFL Memorial Division title. Junior quarterback Josh Colella has thrown for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns. Eastern has played a more difficult schedule than EHT. That said, the Vikings enter the postseason on a four-game losing streak after last week’s 22-21 loss to Williamstown. Sophomore running back A-Shaad Carter is a home run threat. He has rushed for 908 yards and five touchdowns.

South Jersey Group 3

(5) Delran (5-4) at (4) Timber Creek (7-2), 6 p.m.

Timber Creek has won seven in a row since losing its first two games to Williamstown and Vineland by a total of 10 points. Sophomore quarterback Keeanu Darji has thrown for 1,940 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 426 yards and 13 scores. Delran, which was hit hard by graduation from last year’s Group 2 sectional finalist, has improved over the second half of the season. The Bears have won three of their last four games. Junior quarterback-defensive back Nate Marter is a true two-way player. He has 56 tackles and two interceptions. Marter has also thrown for 582 yards and six touchdowns and run for 288 yards and five scores.

Central Jersey Group 5

(5) Freehold Township (5-4) at Williamstown (6-3), 6:30 p.m.

Freehold Township enters with a two-game winning streak. Quarterback Dakota Lasater is a major dual-threat. He has passed for 1,895 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 409 yards and six scores. Williamstown, under first-year coach Brian Leary, is vastly improved after going 3-7 last year. The Braves have been involved in many close games, going 4-2 in contests decided by eight or fewer points. Williamstown is coming off one of its best wins, last week’s 22-21 victory over Eastern. Senior quarterback Kristopher Foster has thrown for 1,439 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Saturday

Central Jersey Group 1

(5) Clayton (6-2) at Audubon (5-2), 11 a.m.

Clayton has won two in a row and five of six. Audubon earned a share of WJFL National Division with last week’s 28-14 win over Bishop Eustace. The Green Wave enter the postseason on a five-game winning streak. Quarterback Jude Cotter has thrown for exactly 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Eastern RB No. 0 A-Shaad Carter
