Phils Out-Pitched and Out-Hit

Javier Vazquez pitched a seven-hit shutout and struck out 10 as the Montreal Expos beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 Monday night.

Orlando Cabrera, Michael Barrett and Jose Vidro each had RBIs for the Expos.

The Phillies, who entered two games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East, are 4-8 since the All-Star break. Montreal is 23-23 since Jeff Torborg replaced Felipe Alou as manager on May 31. Vazquez ran just two three-ball counts and walked none while recording his second complete game of the season and fourth career shutout – his second this year. Since losing four straight starts, Vazquez is 4-0 with a 2.98 ERA. He has 35 strikeouts in his last four starts.

Montreal had just three hits off Omar Daal (10-3) before scoring twice in the sixth.

Vidro led off with a line-drive double that left fielder Pat Burrell misplayed and allowed to sail over his head. Vidro went to third on Vladimir Guerrero`s single and, after Mark Smith popped to third, scored on Cabrera`s liner to center. Barrett`s two-out single to center scored Guerrero to make it 2-0.

Montreal added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Vidro. Peter Bergeron tripled to left-center to start the inning, and scored just ahead of right fielder Bobby Abreu`s throw on Vidro`s fly out.

Philadelphia`s biggest threat came in the seventh, but Burrell struck out and Johnny Estrada flied to left with runners on second and third.

Scott Rolen started the inning by hitting a single off the right-field wall. He moved to second on Travis Lee`s single and both runners advanced on Marlon Anderson`s bouncer to first. But Vazquez then retired Burrell and Estrada to end the inning.

Daal allowed nine hits and three runs in seven innings. He is 4-3 with a 5.43 ERA since starting 6-0. Daal was 4-19 last year.

Notes: The Phillies swapped backup catchers with the New York Mets before the game, getting Todd Pratt for Gary Bennett. Philadelphia also recalled OF Turner Ward and optioned OF Eric Valent to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. ... Guerrero is 7-for-10 in his career against Daal. ... Bergeron`s 19-game hitting streak is tied with Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie for third best in franchise history. Guerrero had a 31-game hitting streak in 1999 and Delino DeShields hit in 21 straight in 1993. ... Rolen has one extra-base hit in 67 at-bats.
