Phillies sweat at Vet

Phillies sweat at Vet Jackson, who had been 1-for-23 lifetime against Daal, finished with a career high-tying four hits. He scored three runs and drove in two as the Padres stopped a three-game losing streak. The Phillies began the day two games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

Kevin Jarvis (9-9) gave up a home run to Jimmy Rollins on his first pitch of the game. One out later, Scott Rolen hit his 12th homer, an upper-deck shot to left field.

Jarvis, who leads the NL in homers allowed with 31, recovered nicely and retired 18 of the next 19 batters.

Jarvis gave up only three more hits in 6 2-3 innings. He wilted in the 95-degree heat in the seventh, giving up singles to Travis Lee and Doug Glanville and walking Todd Pratt to load the bases.

Chuck McElroy relieved and ended the threat by striking out pinch-hitter Felipe Crespo on three pitches.

San Diego began its comeback off Daal (10-4) in the third, loading the bases on singles by Jackson, D`Angelo Jimenez and Jarvis and scoring when Rickey Henderson grounded into a double play.

Jackson delivered a two-run double, scoring Phil Nevin and Ben Davis, in the fifth as the Padres took a 3-2 lead.

Davis` eighth homer made it 4-2 in the sixth. Jackson later singled and scored on a throwing error by reliever Cliff Politte.

Mark Kotsay`s RBI groundout in the eighth gave San Diego another run.

Notes:
The Phillies honored Tony Gwynn before the game. As a part of the ceremony, the Padres` on-deck circle was emblazoned with the No. 19. Gwynn walked in a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth. It was Gwynn`s last game at Veterans Stadium. ... Jackson`s other four-hit game came on April 7, 2000, against Montreal. ... Henderson made a sensational diving catch in left field to rob Doug Glanville of an extra-base hit in the second. He wasn`t as fortunate at the plate as he went 0-for-4 with seven runners stranded. ... Rollins led off the game with a homer for the second time this season. The other occurred on May 4 against San Francisco. ... The Phillies are 16-8 in games that Daal has started, which includes five straight losses. ...
