Patriots Sweep The Sharks CAMDEN, NJ—August 25, 2001— The Riversharks packed the house with 6,304 fans tonight for the second largest crowd in Campbell`s Field history, only to see the Sharks fall at the hands of the Somerset Patriots 7-3. The Patriot win is good enough for a three-game sweep knocking Camden nine games back.

The game began with a bang when the second hitter of the game, Somerset designated hitter DaRond Stovall hit a one-out solo home run off of Camden starter Derek Root. The lead would not stand long. Sharks leadoff hitter, Brad Strauss stepped up to the plate in the bottom half of the first inning and knocked out his 10th home run of the season off of Patriot starter Doug Walls. The score remained tied at one until Patriot shortstop Pablo Martinez`s double in the top of the fifth knocked in catcher Rick Sellers, who reached base earlier with a single. Once again, the Riversharks would answer in the bottom of the fifth with Strauss scoring on shortstop Jesus Azuaje`s single. Somerset would then break for four singles in the fifth inning scoring three runs and knocking out starter Derek Root. This time the Sharks offense could not answer scoring only one run in each of the next two innings.

Derek Root suffered the loss dropping his record to 6-6 with Camden for the season, while Doug Walls earned the victory improving to 7-6 for the season with Somerset. Somerset was led offensively by catcher Rick Sellers, who went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and leftfielder Charles Poe and rightfielder Kevin Dattola each going 3-for-5 with one RBI to assist in the 11 hit attack. Offensively Camden could manage only six hits in the game, two of which would come from rightfielder Gil Martinez (2-for-4). Also, Brad Strauss went 1-for-4 tonight with one run batted in and one run scored, including his 10th homerun.

The Riversharks remain in town beginning a three-game series with Lehigh Valley tomorrow. Camden will send Anthony Briggs (0-3, 5.67) to the mound to battle Hiroshi Numate (2-4, 4.75). All fans will be invited onto the field immediately following tomorrow`s game for a free ice cream sundae, courtesy of Volume Services of America. Also, the first 2,000 kids to enter the gates will receive My Personal Tudor Software, courtesy of Campbell`s Soups.
