Bridgeport Speedway News Doug Hoffman Cruises To Bridgeport Modified Win To Stop Horton`s Win Streak

Bridgeport, NJ – Allentown, PA`s Doug Hoffman won the twenty-five lap modified feature at Bridgeport Speedway Saturday night, picking up his fourth win of the 2001 season. Hoffman`s win, combined with point leader Jamie Mills` seventh place finish and Jimmy Horton`s fourth place, finish pulled Hoffman within eighteen points of the lead in the points race. In Bridgeport Sportsman action, Neshanic Station, NJ`s Rich Stinson, in his own #27, won the twenty lap main event. Mantua, NJ resident Bob “the Lone Ranger” Adams won the twenty lap Bridgeport Winged Sprint A-Main, winning for the third time this season in New Jersey`s newest racing division. In full-bodied stock car action at the South Jersey 5/8th mile oval, point leader Rich Reider picked up his seventh Street Stock win of the season, while Dave Wilhelm won the Enduro Stock feature.

Doug Hoffman, driving the Flurer Machine #60 OVER, started the Modified feature in seventh place, and by the fourth lap was right on the bumper of early leader Ryan Kerr. For the next three laps, Kerr and Hoffman battled for the lead, running side by side for much of the time. Exiting turn two on the seventh lap, Kerr got enough bite from his Ryan`s Texaco #1K to pull away from Hoffman and build up a three car length lead down the backstretch, but the advantage was negated a half lap later when the yellow came out for Joe Puzzella`s 82P, tightening up the field. On the ensuing restart, Hoffman used the outside groove to perfection, taking the high side around Kerr in turns one and two, to control the lead on the backstretch. Kerr held on to the runner up spot for the next two laps, but couldn`t hold off a flying Jimmy Chester, who took over second place on lap eleven. Chester then set his sights on Hoffman and the lead, and for a few laps it looked as if the Speed Palace #44 was closing in on the leader. Chester`s mount lost that extra edge of speed though, and had to fight 2000 season champion Wade Hendrickson, who was ready to challenge for second place. Hendrickson really had the Rio Brothers #R10 hooked up to the clay surface, and on lap thirteen passed Chester. Hoffman was never really tested the rest of the way, and went on to get his fourth win of the season, followed by Hendrickson and Chester. Jimmy Horton, who had his three race win streak broken, brought the Miles Concrete #901 home in fourth, while Dave Adams did a great job of holding off point leader Jamie Mills to finish fifth in the Hooters #37. Chester, Hendrickson, and Kerr won the qualifying heats for the Big Block Modifieds, with rookie Bud Schweibinz taking the consolation race.

Rookie drivers Rob Pierce and Jim Britt led the twenty-six car Bridgeport Sportsman field to the post to start their main event, and Britt grabbed the lead for the first two circuits, while Rich Stinson was charging up through the pack from his ninth starting spot. Stinson blasted by Britt to lead lap three, and began to pull away from the field. 2000 season champ Mark Forte, who qualified for the feature by winning the second consolation race and had to start in twentieth place, put on a driving clinic for the fans, pointing his Harris Signs #40 to wherever an opening would appear. This hard charging style got Forte into third place by the fifth lap, and two laps later he would take over the runner up spot while setting his sights on Stinson. At the halfway mark, Forte appeared to be slowly nibbling away at Stinson`s lead, but with five to go, Forte lost some of his handling and Stinson again pulled away, on his way to his second win of the year. Forte lost second spot with two to go to Bill Briggs and saw one-time feature winner Bill Klingmeyer work his way by for third on the last lap. Forte held on to fourth, while Billy Harris brought the D`Antonio #3 back from an early race accident and pit stop to come home with a fine fifth place finish. Steve Lozorak, Britt, and second generation driver Rick Beavers won the eight lap qualifying heats, while Forte and Friday night winner Bob Sarkisian won the two consolation events.

The competitive Bridgeport Winged Sprint division, which gets better every week as the young drivers get more experience, saw King of Prussia, PA`s Matt Beasley take off from his outside pole position starting spot and lead the twenty-lap A-Main until the halfway mark. At halfway, Bob “the Lone Ranger” Adams made his move and slipped past Beasley to take the lead. A lap fifteen red flag for a three car tangle in turn four that saw last week`s winner, Dave Brown, flip his Asphalt Industries #97, tightened up the field and eliminated Adams` lead. Adams again pulled away on the restart, and although a lap eighteen caution again brought the pack together, Adams was not to be denied his third win of the season. Beasley ran a great race to come home in the runner up spot, while two time winner Chip Brown finished in third place. Duane Lawler and four time winner Jeff Mueller completed the top five. Qualifying heats for the Jasper Racing Engines sprint cars were won by Mares Stellfox and fast improving Joe Butts, Jr.

Ron Bradley and Bud Hayes swapped the early lead in the fifteen lap Street Stock feature, while seventh starting Rich Reider was making his weekly charge to the front. Reider was in the runner up spot on just the sedond lap, and trailed Hayes for three laps before driving the Seven Bridges Construction #1 around Hayes` #32 to take the lead. With the five to go sign waving from Starter Dennis Weir, Reider had a comfortable lead while Hayes had his hands full holding off the fast closing Wayne Pfeil. Pfeil, with four feature wins this season, finally got past Hayes on the last lap, but ran out of time to give winner Reider any trouble. Mays Landing, NJ`s Reider had his seventh win of the season, with the fast closing Pfeil, Hayes, Bill Force Sr., and Bradley filling out the top five.

Abingdon, MD`s Dave Wilhelm won the Enduro Stock feature, followed by Ken Watson and Steve Haegele.

NOTES:
In light of the tragic events this past week, announcer Jeff Ahlum did a fine job making sure that the fans and competitors in attendance paid their respect to casualties, survivors, and all their families, as well as our country in this trying time. Money was collected for the American Red Cross, with 50-50 winner Bill Johnson Jr. donating all his winnings, as well as many contributions coming from fans and participants as well…The heat race action was some of the best seen at the track, with the second Bridgeport Sportsman and second Big Block Modified heats being the most memorable. In the sportsman heat, a four car pack of Jim Britt, Jeff Parker, G.R. Smith, and Frank McDonnell ran under a blanket for most of the race, while in the modified heat, Dave Adams and Wade Hendrickson waged a side by side battle lap after lap…Mike Conlon, of Ridley, PA and Pompton Lake, NJ`s Michael Snyder won the Kids Scooter Giveaway for this week.
