Strange and Scary Local Web Sites

Strange and Scary Local Web Sites There is true terror out there, and not too far out either – right here in New Jersey, and one site has the full rundown on all the weird New Jersey happenings. This site makes the “Jersey Devil” seem sedate in comparison. WeirdNJ.com is the site to visit if you want to plan a trip that no travel agent could ever fathom. The graphics are excellent, so be patient. Weirdnj is a large site, well worth taking the time to explore. If you’re the curious, brave type, you may decide to plan some night trips. A careful search of the site will take you to some places in close reach. Under the heading “Roads Less Traveled”, you’ll discover Gravity Hill in Jackson. If you have the courage, go to the designated place, sit in your car, and feel it pulled up a hill … BACKWARDS. Or, visit Deptford’s Indian Curse Road, where mysterious deaths began to befall workers who disturbed the sacred Indian burial ground. Another weird SJ mystery is the Blue Hole in Winslow Township, where Icy blue waters await the brave explorer… Just don’t go for a dip. You may never return…

For the less adventurous, check out “Nike Missile Bases”, under the heading “Abandoned”. This section delves into some interesting South Jersey history at the time of the Cold War.

Speaking of New Jersey’s Nike Bases, here is a great site devoted entirely to the Marlton Nike Base. The Marlton Nike base was part of the U.S. Army’s Air defense Command, and was operational between the years of 1955 to 1963. Jammed with information, visitors can peruse, maps, pictures, and memoirs from a man stationed at the base when it was operational. This base not only served and protected South Jersey, but also served as the Evesham Township Police/Fire and First aid academy in its later years. This is an excellent site for anyone interested in the history of Evesham Township!

While on the subject of the cold war in South Jersey, Moorestown also played an important roll in the defense of South Jersey! Some of you may remember the Giant Golf Ball that adorned the roadside along Centerton Road in Moorestown. Built by RCA in 1959, the radar station was operated by the U.S. Air force and was a prototype ballistic missile early warning station during the Cold War. This site gives a history of the “Golf Ball”, and dispels some rumors that surfaced during its hey day.
