Anthrax Contamination in New Jersey

Anthrax Contamination in New Jersey Five people have been confirmed infected with anthrax; two are suspected to have the disease. Two of those have the inhaled form of the disease; the others are infected with skin anthrax.

Inhalation anthrax:

  • Female postal worker at the Hamilton regional mail facility. Remains hospitalized in good condition.

  • Female postal worker at Hamilton. Treated and released from the hospital.

    Skin anthrax:

  • Teresa Heller, letter carrier at West Trenton post office in Ewing.

  • Patrick O'Donnell, 35, who sorts and loads mail in Hamilton.

  • A 51-year-old Hamilton Township woman who works in an accounting office in Mercerville, near the Hamilton post office.

  • Another Hamilton employee, a maintenance worker, likely had skin anthrax but tests to confirm could not be done because he had already been treated with antibiotics.

  • A 54-year-old male postal employee from Delaware who processes mail at the Bellmawr regional mail facility in Camden County has suspected skin anthrax.

    Teams are testing for anthrax at all New Jersey post offices that handle mail from the Hamilton regional mail center.

    Anthrax has been found at the following sites:

  • Hamilton regional mail center. The FBI has found anthrax in spores were found in 14 of the 23 samples collected. Health Department tests found anthrax in 19 of 59 samples. The public area of the facility tested negative for anthrax.

  • Princeton post office in West Windsor. Health Department tests found a trace of anthrax.

  • Hamilton accounting office. One of seven FBI tests found anthrax in an office mail bin.
