CH Man Pleads Guilty to Extortion

CH Man Pleads Guilty to Extortion Robert E. Gibson, 60, of Cherry Hill, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Newark to a charge of extortion. Gibson was the director of public utilities and superintendent of water and sewer for Camden. Gibson was accused of accepting cash from United Gunite in Irvington to assist the company in its deals with the city. United Gunite was contracted to repair Camden's sewers.

United Gunite executives Gerald Free and Steven Carroll previously pleaded guilty to bribing public officials in the state and are awaiting sentencing. Gibson reportedly received $20,800 in cash from 1997 through 1998. He faces a maximum 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for September 9.
