Miss Am Pageant Controversy

by 6 ABC-AP | Sep 9, 2002
Miss Am Pageant Controversy The Miss America pageant is in familiar territory because of a flap over Miss North Carolina.

The last time, it was Vanessa Williams who had to resign after Penthouse magazine published nude, sexually explicit photographs of her taken before she entered the Miss America competition.

This time, it's Rebekah Revels, whose quest for the crown was sidetracked because of topless photographs taken by a former boyfriend.

Revels resigned as Miss North Carolina when the ex-boyfriend sent an e-mail to Miss America Organization officials telling them he had topless photos of her. After the title was given to first runnerup Misty Clymer, Revels sued the pageant and was reinstated as Miss North Carolina.

Miss America officials still recognize Clymer as the state's representative.

An Ohio woman who runs a local pageant calls the situation ridiculous, asking if there will be a Miss South North Carolina and a Miss North North Carolina.
