Bears Break In to NJ Homes

by NBC10/AP | Nov 4, 2002
Bears Break In to NJ Homes Wildlife officials say the number bears breaking into homes in New Jersey is on the rise.

There are 54 reports this year -- twice as many as last year.

Meanwhile, attempted bear break-ins have gone up from four last year to 23 this year.

The state has destroyed about 25 bears, including one that tried to force its way into a North Brunswick home over the weekend.

Fish and Wildlife spokesman Al Ivany says the number of incidents should decrease if the weather stays cold.

Ivany says black bears do not truly hibernate, but they usually retire to their dens in December.
