Man Attacks Wife and Niece
A woman says her husband kidnapped her, held her hostage and attacked her. The woman's 15-year-old niece also allegedly was taken hostage and sexually assaulted. Dorsia Jackson says the man she was trying to divorce after five abusive years, Derek Wilds, broke into her sister's house in Camden early Saturday morning with a gun.
"He woke me up and tapped my leg and told me to 'Get up, Dorsia,' and let me know I'm going with him," she said. "The niece is going with him, also."
Wilds allegedly held the two at gunpoint and made them walk 17 blocks to an abandoned apartment, where for four days, Jackson says, they were locked in a closet, sexually assaulted and beaten.
"He punched me in both of my eyes, my nose, my mouth," she said. "My jaw was fractured."
Wilds occasionally took Jackson out to pawn jewelry, leaving her niece locked in the closet, Jackson said. Wilds also told Jackson to have her grandmother put $200 in Jackson's checking account so she could withdraw it for ransom.
Wilds apparently took the money but then took Jackson back to the apartment and put her back in the closet with her niece. The two were discovered after someone noticed the door to the abandoned apartment wasn't shut as usual and told authorities.
"We're asking your help in finding this individual, and we certainly want the people involved to know that he's armed and dangerous," said Jim Lynch, the Camden County assistant prosecutor.
Wilds faces charges for kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and making terrorist threats.
