Running & Winning for High School Girls

by Press Release | Mar 27, 2006
Running & Winning for High School Girls The League of Women Voters of Camden County (LWVCC) will host the 7th annual Running & Winning program for junior and senior high school girls on Friday, April 7 at Cherry Hill High School West on Chapel Avenue in Cherry Hill. Running & Winning is designed to teach the leadership skills needed for winning and holding political office.

Each year many of Camden County's prominent female politicians attend and invite the girls to interview them about the challenges and rewards of holding public office. This year it is expected that Assemblywoman Pamela R. Lampitt, Surrogate Pat Jones, Commissioners Joan Leonard and Kathleen Hogan, Councilwomen Lynn Kupchik, Virginia Betteridge, Carol Jenkins Washington, Julie Galezniak, Barbara Holcomb, and Marie Lawrence; and Mayors Tish Columbi of Haddonfield and Phyllis Magazzu of West Berlin will attend along with several members of the Cherry Hill Board of Education.

After the interviews, the girls are divided into teams where they each take on a different role in a campaign. The theme for 2006 is "Property Tax Reform in New Jersey." Each team will have about two hours to study the issue, develop a position, create a slogan and poster, select a candidate and write a speech. The candidate will then deliver the speech to the group.
