Sunset on Delaware Bay: A Shore Thing

Those of us who live in the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood along Delaware Bay gather each night for a seemingly exclusive sunset performance. We line the road above the beach, sit on the aluminum benches interspersed among the tall grasses of the dunes, and stroll in the sand. A few optimists fish from the end of the jagged rock jetties that protect the beach from erosion.
On some nights, porpoises entertain us as we wait for the sun to descend. They glide to and fro gracefully, munching on fish and giving the fisherman an excuse for their empty lines. Occasionally, the sun is shy, setting behind the clouds and denying us our show.
But most nights, the sun bids the day farewell with a flamboyant display of orange and pink. Just before slipping below the horizon, the sun consumes the sky with color so bright the bay shimmers. An instant later, water and sky blend together. And we are already anticipating the next night`s sunset on Delaware Bay. If You Go:
Take Garden State Parkway to 109 North (following signs for Cape May-Lewes Ferry) to 9 North. At the bay, you can go left or right. To the left, you can watch the sunset from David C. Douglas, Sr. Memorial Rotary Park. If you turn right, you can park on any side street and walk back go the bay, or watch the sunset from Whaler`s Cove restaurant and bar (about one half mile up the road).
