High School Football Games of the Week
Many teams will begin division play in the West Jersey Football League this week. Here is a look at some of this week’s South Jersey Football games of the week.

Friday Sept. 8

6 p.m. - Kingsway (2-0, 0-0 WFJL Continental) at Washington Township (1-1, 0-0).

Kingsway has beaten Egg Harbor Township and Williamstown by a combined 73-0. Senior QB Tommy Popoff has completed 11 of 15 for 239 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions*. After opening with a 26-7 loss to Mainland at Ocean City, Washington Township bounced back with a 50-6 win over Eastern as six different players scored for the Minutemen. Kingsway won last year’s meeting 24-10.

6 p.m. - Moorestown (1-1, 0-0 WJFL National) at Northern Burlington (1-1, 0-1).

The National is among the most wide-open divisions and the winner of this game can claim to be a contender. Moorestown bounced back from a 32-27 loss to Burlington Township, to defeat Cherry Hill East, 16-0. Northern Burlington lost its opener, 48-21 to Shawnee, but led 21-20 early in the third quarter. The Greyhounds had no problem last week beating Pemberton, 41-0. NBC QB Ronnie Borden has already thrown for 462 yards and six touchdowns.

6 p.m. - Absegami (1-1, 0-0 WJFL United) at Atlantic City (2-0, 0-0).

Absegami was involved in last week’s wildest game, losing 50-48 against Cedar Creek. QB Kendall Armstrong threw for 250 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in the loss. Atlantic City has beaten Williamstown and Clearview. The Vikings’ Sah’nve Degraffenreidt, among the top juniors in the state, has already caught 12 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. There could be quite a few points put on the board by both teams.

6 p.m. - Cherokee (2-0, 0-0 WJFL American) at St. Augustine (1-1, 0-0).

Cherokee had a shocker last week in a 47-7 win over Hammonton. It wasn’t surprising that the Chiefs won, but earning a 40-point win over a Hammonton team that is expected to contend in Group 4, raised some eyebrows. The opening 22-19 win over Winslow Township was also impressive. Senior Ryan Bender has been a dual-threat, throwing for 128 yards and one touchdown and rushing for 159 yards and four scores. St. Augustine lost 21-16 opening week to Donovan Catholic before beating St. Joseph (Hammonton), 51-15 this past week. Julian Turney rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the win over St. Joseph.

6 p.m. - Delsea (1-0, 0-0 WJFL Independence) at Winslow Township (1-1, 0-0).

These are two quality Top 10 teams in South Jersey. Winslow Township bounced back from that opening loss to Cherokee to defeat Lenape, 34-0. Delsea had no trouble in last week’s 49-19 win at Delran. Zach Maxwell scored three touchdown passes and rushed for another as Delsea took a 42-0 halftime lead. Delsea is the defending South Jersey Group 3 champion, going 12-1, losing to Old Tappan, 24-14 in the state Group 3 championship.
