South Jersey Football Games of the Week
This week a lot of teams begin division action and there are many key matchups.
Mainland (2-0, 0-0 WWJFL American) at Millville (2-0, 0-0), Friday, 6.
These two teams could be battling for the No. 1 spot in South Jersey. Mainland is the defending state Group 4 champion. The Mustangs have won 16 in a row and the last loss was an 18-14 defeat to Millville in the 2022 in a state Group 4 semifinal. Mainland opened with a 30-18 win over Atlantic City before defeating Hammonton this past week, 37-6. Junior QB John Franchini has completed 15 of 23 passes for 461 yards and four TDs for Mainland (courtesy NJ.com stats). Millville opened with a 35-0 win over a quality Holy Spirit team before beating Atlantic City this past week, 49-6. The key will be containing Millville senior receiver Lotzeir Brooks, an Alabama commit, who already has nine receptions for 276 yards and four TDs.

These are two of the top programs in South Jersey. St. Augustine is coming off a 29-0 win over a strong Paul VI team after opening with a 35-6 win over Donovan Catholic. Senior Julian Turney has led the way for St. Augustine, rushing for 226 yards (6.8 avg.) and three touchdowns. Cherokee opened with a 30-0 win over Middletown South before beating Lenape, 27-10 last week as Cooper Burti scored three rushing touchdowns.

Against Kingsway, QB Makhi Brunson threw for 174 yards and a TD and rushed for 39 additional yards. Camden is expected to be a major threat in Group 2. Shawnee opened with a 33-6 win over Northern Burlington before beating Williamstown this past week, 27-7. Junior Brett Lundberg has already rushed for 397 yards (9.6 avg.) and six touchdowns. Shawnee figures to be a contender this season in Group 4.

Maple Shade (0-1, 0-1 WJFL National) at Riverside (2-0, 1-0), Friday, 6.
Riverside, which was 0-10 as recently as 2021, is enjoying a resurgence. The Rams went 6-5 last year and now are aiming for their second straight winning season. Riverside is coming off a 22-10 win over rival Florence. That snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Flashes. Junior Dean Potts threw for a TD pass and ran for another score. This came after Riverside opened with a 28-22 win over Palmyra, as Xavier Parnell rushed for 114 yards and a score. Maple Shade lost its opener on Friday to Lawrence, 26-6. After just two weeks, Riverside and Lawrence are the only unbeaten teams in the seven-team National Division.

Collingswood has won two close games, opening with a 30-26 win over Clayton and then beating Overbrook, 12-6 last week. The Panthers rely on a strong ground game led by Caden Luby, who rushed for 205 yards and four touchdowns in the opening win over Clayton. West Deptford has played two competitive games. The Eagles opened with a 26-21 loss to Manchester Township before rebounding last week with a 29-26 win over Pennsville. Zamir Davis, an exciting sophomore, scored twice for West Deptford.
Collingswood has won two close games, opening with a 30-26 win over Clayton and then beating Overbrook, 12-6 last week.
