South Jersey Football Games of the Week
Cherry Hill West (2-3) at Cherry Hill East (5-0) Thursday 6
This used to be a Thanksgiving rivalry, but like so many, is now played during the regular season due to the expanded playoffs. Despite its unbeaten record, Cherry Hill East is only the 13th seeded South/Central Group 5 team because the schedule hasn’t been as treacherous. So East needs to win to stay in playoff contention. Last year Cherry Hill West won a thriller over East, 29-28 in double overtime. East will be well rested. The Cougars had a bye last week and last played Sept. 27 when they beat Atlantic County Institute of Technology, 35-0. West also had a bye this past week. The Lions have won two of their last three, including a 14-6 win over Highland on Sept. 27 as QB Hayden Baker threw a touchdown pass and rushed for 109 yards.
Timber Creek (4-2) at Camden (4-2), Friday 6
Camden is looking to rebound after last week’s 40-6 loss to South Jersey’s No. 1 team Winslow Township. The Panthers got to withing 19-6 in the third quarter on a 15-yard scoring pass from Mahki Brunson to Wasi Muhammad, but the Eagles pulled away after that. Camden figures to be a major contender in South Jersey Group 2. Meanwhile Timber Creek is coming off one of its best wins of the season a 24-20 victory over Willingboro. Down 20-17, Timber Creek got its game-winning touchdown on a fourth quarter Pick-6 by Erik Worley.
Bishop Eustace (5-1, 3-0 WJFL United) at Holy Cross Prep (5-1, 3-0), Friday, 7
These two teams along with Kipp Cooper Norcross Academy are all 3-0 in the crowded United Division. Eustace is coming off its first loss of the season, Friday’s 32-12 loss to Riverside. Bishop Eustace is led by running back Mehki Simmons, who went over the 4,000-yard career rushing mark during last week’s loss to Riverside. Holy Cross Prep saw its five-game win streak snapped with last week’s 3-0 loss to Princeton. It was another stellar defensive effort by the Lancers, who are allowing just 5.6 points per game.
Northern Burlington (3-3) at Trenton (4-2) Saturday 1
Both teams are looking to earn playoff berths, with Northern Burlington in Group 4 and Trenton in Group 5. This is a must-win situation for Trenton. Last week Trenton saw its four-game win streak snapped with a 27-2 loss to Eastern. Northern Burlington might be able to afford a loss and still qualify for the postseason, but that isn’t definite. Especially since their opponent next week is 6-0 Burlington Township. The Greyhounds end their regular season against Group 2 Haddon Heights (1-4). NBC sophomore QB Brett Waluluk has thrown four TD passes and four for four others. Like Trenton, NBC, will be looking to bounce back from a 34-0 loss to Group 3 Allentown (4-2).
