Eagles At The Break: Moving In The Right Direction
Remember when the Eagles got pummeled by the New York Giants, 34-17 nearly two weeks ago and everybody thought the losing team was dropping off the ends of the Earth?

Two weeks since, the Eagles have beaten the Minnesota Vikings and the Giants by a combined 68-42, to reassert themselves as Super Bowl contenders.

Every team goes through bad spells and that includes the Eagles a year ago, who were just 2-2 after four games before winning 16 of their next 17, including a 4-0 run in the postseason, to earn their second Super Bowl championship.

The Eagles now have a bye this week, which couldn’t have come at a better time.

They had to play this past week without receiver A.J. Brown and center Cam Jurgens and this gives them another week to heal.

Plus, Saquon Barkley for the first time this year looked like the 2024 version, suffered a groin injury in the win over the Giants.

Before that, Barkley rushed for 150 yards and a TD on 14 carries. He set the tone with a 65-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.

Jalen Hurts, who two weeks ago was being criticized for his role in an inconsistent passing game, has just put together two gems.

Against Minnesota he had a perfect 158.3 passer rating after completing 19 of 23 passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

In the win over Giants, Hurts had a 141.5 passer rating while completing 15 of 20 for 179 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

We still think that Hurts should run a little more because he remains among the top dual threat quarterbacks in the NFL. Against the Giants he gained 22 yards on four carries.

Either way, he remains a quarterback who can win big.

Probably the biggest question with the offense is how Brown will continue to act in games he doesn’t receive as many targets as he would like.

Could Brown be sent packing by the Nov. 4 trade deadline?

Anything is possible, but other teams may be wary.

It must be said that Brown remains one of the most dangerous and best receivers in the NFL. Whether he can get on the same page with the Eagles will be one of the key developments of the second half.

The schedule in the second half isn’t easy, but it also isn’t as difficult as the first eight games. The Eagles own wins over four potential playoff teams - Kansas City, the LA Rams, Tampa Bay and Denver.

At least three of those teams – KC, the Rams and Denver – have to be considered Super Bowl contenders. Tampa Bay may also be, but the Buccaneers have endured so many injuries and it’s fair to question if they can keep withstanding playing shorthanded.

The Eagles defense has also played well the last two weeks, especially against the Giants, when they recorded five sacks.

Right now, they have as good an argument to be a Super Bowl contender as any other team in the NFC.
