Girls Basketball Conference/County Tournament Recaps
Prior to the current NJSIAA girls’ basketball tournament, several champions were crowned in county/conference championships. Here is a recap of those tournaments. Teams’ seeds are in parenthesis.

CAMDEN COUNTRY TOURNAMENT

Champion: (1) Paul VI 59, (2) Camden Catholic 37. The champion Eagles weren’t challenged, winning every game by at least 19 points. Senior Rachel Thatcher scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Eagles. It was the initial tournament which also included some Gloucester County teams from the Colonial Conference. Sophomore guard Edore Pela led Camden Catholic with 13 points.

Best game: (2) Camden Catholic 46, (3) Cherry Hill West 41. This was a semifinal game in which the Irish beat the defending state Group 3 champs. The key was an 18-9 third quarter by Camden Catholic that gave the Irish a six-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Pela scored a team-high 16 points for the Irish, while West junior standout Kirsten Gibson also had 16 points for the Lions.

TRI-COUNTY CONFERENCE

Champion: (1) Gloucester Catholic 65, (2) Wildwood, 26. Senior Jahzara Green scored 23 points as Gloucester Catholic won its third straight championship. The Rams wrapped things up with a 19-0 fourth quarter. Gloucester Catholic won its three games by an average of 38.3 points. Senior guard Angela Wilber led Wildwood with nine points.

Best game: (2) Wildwood 69, (3) Glassboro 64 (3 OT). This was a semifinal classic. Junior guard Rebecca Benichou led Wildwood with 22 points. Glassboro junior guard Kezia Brackett scored a game-high 28 points for the Bulldogs.

BURLINGTON COUNTY TOURNAMENT

Champion: (1) Lenape 64, (2) Moorestown, 45. Junior guard El-Anita Joe-Samuel enjoyed a monster game with 40 points and17 rebounds to lead the Indians to victory. This was the closest of three games that Lenape had in the tournament. Leading by five points at halftime, Lenape put the game away with a 25-10 advantage in the third quarter. Senior guard Analyse Intenzo led Moorestown with 12 points.

Best game: There were not many close games in this tournament, so Lenape’s championship win earns the nod here.
