South Jersey Football Game of the Week

Many teams will be playing their third game of this still young season. Here is a look at some of the top games.

Thursday

Delran (1-1) at Cinnaminson (0-2), 6 p.m. This game is listed due to the rivalry as the schools are only a little more than two miles apart. Cinnaminson is looking to get its offense going, after scoring seven points in both of its first two games against Lower Cape May and Moorestown. Delran QB Nate Marter is a dual threat and also a terror on defense as a safety.
Atlantic City (0-2) at Eastern, (2-0), 6. Eastern opened with a 17-14 win over Hunterdon Central, and then beat Cherry Hill East last week, 24-13. Sophomore A’Shaad Carter has rushed for 275 yards (9.1 avg.) and two touchdowns. Atlantic City has played two strong teams and was relatively competitive, losing 32-19 to Shabazz and last week suffered a 30-20 defeat to a potential top five team, St. Augustine. Atlantic City junior QB Marvin Burroughs has thrown for 321 yards and three TDs.

Shawnee (2-0) at Cherry Hill East (0-2), 6:30 p.m. This is not expected to be a competitive game, but the reason of the importance is that Shawnee head coach Tim Gushue is on the verge of a major milestone. Gushue has 299 career wins, all at Shawnee. The Renegades have two impressive wins, 43-35 against Old Bridge in the Battle at the Beach in Ocean City, and 28-14 last week against Pleasantville. East QB Josh Greenberg leads the Cougars in passing yards (333) and rushing yards (175).

Friday

Winslow Township (2-0) at Glassboro (2-0), 6. Winslow Township had more modest expectations after losing coach Bill Belton to St. Augustine, while key players transferred from the defending state Group 4 champs, but coach Jamal White has the Eagles off to a flying start. An opening 55-6 win over Neptune was followed by last week’s 38-0 victory over Kingsway, a South Jersey Group 5 sectional finalist a year ago. Junior Trey Alexander, who rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns in the opening win over Neptune is a major home run threat. Glassboro has as much talent as any team in South Jersey. During last week’s 38-6 win over Mainland, freshman Bryson Daniels threw four touchdown passes.

Paulsboro (2-0) at West Deptford (2-0), 7. This is among the more spirited rivalries in South Jersey. These two were in the same division during the previous two years but are now in different divisions. West Deptford won the WJFL Patriot Division due to a 14-0 win over Paulsboro. West Deptford is coming off a 21-6 win over Willingboro as senior Zamir Davis rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Paulsboro needed a strong defensive effort in last week’s 8-6 win over Salem. The key will be whether Paulsboro can stop the vaunted West Deptford ground game.
