South Jersey Football Games of the Week

Friday

Atlantic City (1-3, 0-2 WJFL American Division) at Winslow Township (3-1, 1-1), 6

On paper this looks like a mismatch, but Atlantic City has played arguably the toughest early-season schedule in South Jersey. The three losses are to Shabazz, St. Augustine and Washington Township, who are a combined 10-1. Trailing 21-0 last week to Washington Township, Atlantic City scored 19 unanswered points, but failed on a two-point conversion that would have tied the game. Atlantic City junior quarterback Marvin Burroughs has already passed for 3,410 career yards and 36 touchdowns.

St. Augustine (4-0, 2-0 WJFL American) at Millville (2-1, 1-1), 6

Millville has to hope that St. Augustine hasn’t come down from the high of last week’s 42-14 win over previously unbeaten and two-time defending Group 4 state champion Winslow Township. That was an emotional win for St. Augustine first-year head coach Bill Belton, who guided his alma mater Winslow Township the previous four years. Cincinnati commit Roman Coney rushed for 248 yards and five touchdowns. Last week Millville defeated Kingsway, 30-19, rebounding from the previous week’s 39-20 loss to unbeaten Washington Township. Against Kingsway, Millville led 30-11 entering the fourth quarter. The Thunderbolts are led by senior QB Robert O’Connor, a third-year starter who has thrown for more than 5,000 career yards.

Northern Burlington (3-1, 1-1 WJFL Continental) at Pennsauken (3-1, 2-0), 6

NBC is looking to bounce back from last week’s 38-13 loss to visiting Eastern. The Greyhounds received two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Brent Walulak. This season Walulak has thrown for 639 yards and five touchdowns and run for 217 yards and seven scores. Pennsauken bounced back from a 35-17 loss to Vineland to beat Cherry Hill East last week, 28-21. Pennsauken needed a 14-0 fourth quarter to win.

Haddonfield (4-0, 2-0 WJFL Constitution) at West Deptford (4-0, 2-0), 7

This might be the game of the week. The winner of this game will have the edge in the conference race. Haddonfield has already defeated contender Seneca, while West Deptford has yet to play the Golden Eagles. This is also one of the better football rivalries, stemming from the two teams’ days of competing in the Colonial Conference.

After winning its first three games by 22 or more points, Haddonfield defeated Delran last week, 21-13. The usually potent Haddonfield offense was limited to 192 total yards. Haddonfield junior quarterback James Farrell has passed for 416 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 221 yards and four scores. West Deptford is coming off an impressive 22-7 win over Paul VI as Cole Paskiewicz rushed for 168 yards and three TDs on just 13 carries. Paskiewicz has rushed for 397 yards (8.4 avg.) and six touchdowns this season.

Saturday

Schalick (4-0, 2-0 WJFL Diamond) at Paulsboro (3-1, 2-0), 11

Schalick had three blowout wins before last week’s 15-14 nail-biting victory against Salem. Paulsboro’s lone loss was 22-0 to unbeaten rival West Deptford. The Red Raiders bounced back with last week’s 12-0 victory over Pennsville. Last year Paulsboro beat Schalick, 6-0 in the regular season before losing to the Cougars, 35-28, in a South Jersey Group 1 semifinal. This year’s game is expected to be just as close.
