South Jersey Public School Boys’ Basketball Playoff Recap
It was a great South Jersey boys’ basketball tournament, with plenty of drama and some big upsets. Here are the South Jersey public school sectional title winners along with a Central Jersey champion from South Jersey. Teams seedings are in parenthesis.
SJ Group 4
Final: (1) Cherry Hill East, 57, (2) Lenape 52
This was even more impressive since Cherry Hill East lost leading scorer Jamieson Young to a season-ending injury after 12 games. East and Lenape split their regular season meetings. In the championship, junior Chris Abreu had game-highs of 23 points and five steals. Senior Noahm Marciano was East’s other player in double figures with 10 points. During the four South Jersey playoff wins, Abreu averaged 16.2 points. Playing some high-powered offense, East held teams to an average of 51.7 points in its four playoff wins. Three of the four semifinalists were from the Olympic Conference American Division, which Cherry Hill East also captured.
SJ Group 3
Final: (3) Ocean City 51, (4) Delsea, 33
Ocean City successfully defended its sectional crown. Senor forward Luke Tjoumakaris scored a game-high 16 points in the championship game. The Raiders’ closest call was a 50-48 quarterfinal win over Winslow Township. Ocean City won with a tenacious defense. In the four South Jersey playoff wins, Ocean City allowed an average of just 40.7 points.
SJ Group 2
Final: (4) Middle Township 67, (2) Camden 64.
Middle Township upset the defending sectional champs. The winning Panthers had lost to Camden in each of the previous two sectional title games. Mason Muraski, a 6-2 junior, scored a team-high 22 points against Camden. Middle Township had to beat the top two seeds to win the title, having defeated No. 2 Haddonfield, 50-45, in the semifinal.
SJ Group 1
Final: (14) New Egypt 48, (1) Salem 46, OT.
This was the biggest upset win in the tournament. Lightly regarded New Egypt beat No. 3 Haddon Township, 42-36; No. 6 Penns Grove, 47-38; No. 2 Palmyra and finally No. 1 Salem. Seniors Nolan Arnold and Clyde Ferris scored 19 and 18 respectively in the championship game. The Warriors entered the tournament with just a 11-14 record, but got over .500 with the win over Salem for the first time since being 8-7 on Jan. 23.
Central Jersey Group 3
Final: (2) Westampton Tech 66, Middletown North, 56
Westampton Tech won its first-ever sectional title. Jason Livingstone, a 6-6 senior, led Tech with 20 points in the title game. He averaged 17.7 points in the four Central Jersey playoff wins. Westampton Tech won its four playoff games by an average of 11 points. The other wins were 68-59 over (15) Middletown North; 64-50 over (7) Burlington Township and 61-50 over (3) Ewing. The title win was the 13th victory in the last 14 games for Tech.
