South Jersey Football Games of the Week

Many teams opened last week and by the end of this weekend, every South Jersey team will have played a game. Here is the look at the games of the week.

Thursday Sept. 3

Paul VI (0-0) at Delran (1-0), 6 p.m. Paul VI’s opener with Gloucester Catholic was cancelled so this WJFL Constitution game will be the Eagles’ opener. Nate Klecko who rushed for 631 yards and nine touchdowns, leads the Paul VI offense. Delran, which was hit hard by graduation from a 10-2 team that reached the SJ Group 2 final, opened with a 24-17 win over Cherry Hill East at Rowan. New Delran quarterback Nate Mater threw for 114 yards and one TD and rushed for 116 yards and another score.

Seneca (0-1) at Haddonfield (1-0), 7. Last year the two shared the WJFL Continental title. Haddonfield beat Seneca, 14-11, in last year’s meeting. Now both teams are battling in the WJFL Constitution Division. Seneca is looking to bounce back from an opening 26-20 OT loss to Lenape. QB Anthony Tirico threw for 131 yards and a TD and ran for 196 yards and another score. Haddonfield opened with a 34-12 win against Overbrook. James Farrell threw for 82 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 57 yards and a score.

Friday Sept. 4

Glassboro (1-0) at Mainland (1-0), 6 p.m. This is a game in the WJFL Classic Division. Glassboro has now won 28 in a row after an opening 40-20 win over Immaculata at Rowan University. Freshman quarterback Bryson Daniels was strong in his debut, completing 9-of-13 passes for 154 yards and a TD. Mainland nipped a quality Pleasantville, 7-6 in its opener. Lucas DiBiaso’s fourth quarter 4-yard TD run and Landon Meade’s PAT gave Mainland the comeback win.

Millville (1-0) at Washington Township (1-0), 6. This is a WJFL American Division game between two of the expected top teams in South Jersey. Millville opened with a 29-20 victory over Erasmus Hall (NY) in the Battle at the Beach in Ocean City. Robert O’Conner threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns to spearhead the win for Millville. Washington Township, which graduated 28 seniors from last year’s Group 5 state championship team, earned a 14-6 win over Pope John in a defensive struggle at the Battle at the Beach. Gabe Palaganas led the defensive effort with two sacks.

Delsea (1-0) at Rancocas Valley (1-0), 6. This is a WJFL Colonial matchup. Rancocas Valley has one of the top defenses in South Jersey and it showed during an opening 23-0 win over Wayne Valley during the Battle at the Beach. David Ogunsola led the defensive effort with three sacks and Zach Merhar threw for 173 yards and two TDs. Delsea earned a 12-6 win over Vineland in coach Kyle Klein’s debut. Coming off a 4-6 record, Delsea is looking for improvement and will face a major test against one of the top teams in South Jersey.
