(Trenton, NJ)- James Lofton and Virgil Chevalier each hit 1st Inning solo homers to lead the Thunder to an 8-4 win over Portland Saturday night at Waterfront Park.

The homers by Lofton and Chevalier came off Portland starter Claudio Vargas and gave Trenton a 2-0 lead. Vargas (6-6), who allowed four solo homers in a loss to Trenton six days ago, allowed seven runs in four innings tonight.

The Thunder (47-44) added another run in the 3rd Inning on an RBI double by Jerry Salzano. In the 4th Inning, Trenton scored four times to break the game open. Lofton and Luis Garcia got bases-loaded walks. Chevalier added a two-run single for a 7-0 lead.

Greg Montalbano made his Trenton debut and took a shutout into the 7th Inning before allowing a two-run homer to Portland`s Abraham Nunez. Montalbano (1-0) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs (45-43) made it an 8-4 game in the 9th Inning, but Cory Spencer closed the door by recording the final two outs.

Trenton and Portland will wrap up their series on Sunday at 1:05 PM. Bret Saberhagen (0-0) will make a rehab start for Trenton. Kevin Olsen (7-1) starts for Portland.
