(Trenton)- Jeff Bailey`s RBI single in the 13th Inning gave Portland a 10-9 win over the Thunder Sunday at Waterfront Park. The Sea Dogs earned a split of the series with the win.
Bailey`s game-winning hit came after a pair of two-out walks by Thunder reliever Josh Garrett (2-2), who took the loss. Bailey sent the game to extra innings with a two-run, two out homer in the 9th Inning off Cory Spencer that tied the game at 9-9.
Portland (46-43) jumped out to a 7-2 in the 5th Inning only to see Trenton score six runs in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead. Trenton was aided by four Sea Dogs errors in the inning.
Trenton (47-45) extended that lead to 9-7 in the 8th Inning on an RBI single by Jerry Salzano. After Bailey tied the game in the 9th Inning, the Thunder had a chance to win it in the bottom half, but a fly ball doubleplay ended the threat with Virgil Chevalier being thrown out at the plate.
Aaron Scheffer (1-0) got the win with three perfect innings of relief.
As for Bret Saberhagen, he allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He threw 67 pitches, 42 for strikes.
The Thunder play host to New Britain on Monday at 7:05 PM. Chris Elmore (2-0) starts for Trenton against the Rock Cats` Jon McDonald (3-3). Copyright © 1999 TheTrenton Thunder and Velcero™ All Rights Reserved.
