Bridgeport Speedway News

Bridgeport, NJ – The 2001 season has been nothing but bad luck for Pennsville, NJ`s Chip Brown, as the veteran racer has crashed, flipped, spun out, and had mechanical failures all while leading races at the 5/8th mile Bridgeport Speedway. Brown, driving the Speed Palace #22 Bridgeport Winged Sprinter, needed Friday the 13th to change his luck, as he swept the night`s events, winning his qualifying heat along with the twenty lap A-Main feature. The Bridgeport Winged Sprints, part of the special “Wing Night at Bridgeport” which has both the ¼ mile and 5/8th mile track being used on the same night, competed on the big track, with twenty of the Jasper Racing Engines racers competing in the night`s events. All events for the sprints were caution free, with the twenty lap A-Main taking just seven minutes and eight seconds on New Jersey`s fastest dirt track!
Brown and Wayne Mauro led the field to the post for the start of the A-Main, with Brown charging out to the lead. Mauro held the runner up spot for just one lap, as former ARDC Midget driver Mike Piersig, in the Comcast #24, pulled by to take over second place on the next lap. While Piersig tried to cut into Brown`s lead, one-time feature winner Brian Powell was working his way up from tenth starting spot, cracking the top five on just the third lap, and passing Bob ”the Lone Ranger” Adams for fourth place on the next go-round, with Jeff Foote holding down third. This top four ran nose to tail, with never more than a few car lengths separating each sprinter for the next fourteen laps, when Powell made his final move, passing Foote with two to go and getting around Piersig with Starter Dennis Weir waving the white flag. Powell looked to try to get Brown, but Brown had enough power to grab his first win of the 2001 season. Powell came home second, while Piersig finished third, with Foote and Jim Walters completing the top five. Brown and Piersig won the eight lap qualifying heats.
