Lehigh Defeats Camden 4-1

Lehigh Defeats Camden 4-1 CAMDEN, NJ—August 26, 2001— Lehigh Valley knocks off the Camden Riversharks 4-1 in an Atlantic League contest. Lehigh Valley first baseman Asbel Ortiz hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning pushing the Diamonds past the Riversharks. The loss for the Riversharks extends the losing streak to four games, one game shy of their season high.

Lehigh Valley started the game scoring one run in the top of the first inning when shortstop Victor Gutierrez, who doubled to lead off the game, scored on rightfielder Chad Gambill`s sacrifice fly. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Camden third baseman Brad Strauss doubled to center forcing in catcher Joe Goodwin to tie the game at one. The tie stood until Ortiz hit his fourth home run of the season over the leftfield wall off Camden starter Anthony Briggs. Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, the Riversharks could not score, as pinch hitter Guillermo Garcia hit into a game ending 1-2-3 double play.

Anthony Briggs (0-4) took the loss for Camden despite pitching an impressive 7 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on 11 hits, three walks and one strikeout. After allowing a run in the first, Briggs settled down not allowing a run until the middle of the eighth inning. Lehigh Valley starter Hiroshi Numate earned the victory improving to 3-4 for the season. He also went seven innings allowing one run on four hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

Tomorrow night the Riversharks will look to Ryan Schurman (7-9, 3.04) to step up and break the four-game losing streak. The first 2,000 kids to enter the gates at Campbell`s Field will receive a back-to-school kit compliments of Campbell`s Soups. Game time is 6:35p.m. with gates opening at 5:30p.m.
