School Bus Safety

Lower Merion traffic safety expert John Dougherty: "Slow down...and just read the signs and be aware of the school crossings that have been in operation back in June."
A reminder: Once the flashing lights turn red you must stop no closer than 10 feet from the bus in Pennsylvania, 25 feet in New Jersey. Delaware has no distance requirement. Remember to stop on all 4 lane highways, unless they`re separated by some kind of divider in the middle like a median strip.
If you don`t, not only are you jeopardizing a child`s life but also you could face a $300 fine and automatic license suspension.

Katie Renner/Plymouth Meeting, PA.: "For now my husband and I plan to be there when she gets on the bus and one of us will be there when she gets off."

Joe Grinkewicz/safety oordinator: "Unfortunately, A lot of motorists can not recognize that this is a school bus."
As of September 1st, All Pennsylvania school buses must have a safety arm, ensuring that a child crosses safely in front of the bus.
Joe Grinkewicz/safety coordinator: "If a student crosses too close, he or she is in the danger zone and a lot of times the driver can`t see that child."
School bus safety is a two way street. Not only do students need to be careful crossing but also drivers need to heed the golden rules of the road.
