Kendall Named Fellow of DSI CAMDEN -- Dr. Kenneth E. Kendall, a professor of management at the Rutgers University School of Business at Camden, has become the first educator at a New Jersey university to be inducted as a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI).

A resident of Voorhees, Kendall was awarded with DSI’s highest honor during the prestigious organization’s annual meeting in San Francisco in November. He becomes one of only 94 scholars worldwide to be granted this distinction, which honors exceptional contributions to the theory and practice of decision sciences, which includes management science, information systems and ecommerce.

Kendall’s appointment makes Rutgers the first New Jersey university represented on the Decision Sciences Institute’s Fellowship roster. In the metro Philadelphia region, only the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel join Rutgers-Camden on that list, which also includes such schools as Harvard, Stanford, Duke, and Yale.

In presenting the award to Kendall, the DSI cited the Rutgers-Camden professor’s “more than 60 articles, two innovative textbooks, ‘Systems Analysis and Design’ and ‘Needs Assessment and Project Planning,’ as well as an edited research volume… His current efforts in ecommerce and web-based technology promise more high quality and influential contributions to his field.” The DSI also applauded Kendall’s commitment to mentoring doctoral students in the information sciences.

Kendall’s research appears in such leading journals as Decision Sciences, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Operations Research, and has led to several awards, including the Silver Core by the International Federation for Information Processing.

The Decision Sciences Institute, which has approximately 5,000 members worldwide, is an interdisciplinary academic organization dedicated to the advancement of the science and practice of education and research about business decisions. Through national, international and regional meetings, competitions, and publications such as the Decision Sciences journal, DSI provides an international forum for presenting and sharing research in the study of decision processes across disciplines, in both traditional and emerging areas of study.

“Dr. Kendall’s honor is well-deserved and reflects his many significant contributions to the growth of knowledge about information science,” says Rutgers-Camden Provost Roger Dennis. “The fact that Dr. Kendall and his Rutgers-Camden colleagues are crafting the research and textbooks that will teach tomorrow’s students means that our students are learning the most current information available.”

Kendall earned his doctoral degree in management systems from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he also received a master of business administration degree. In 1969 he received a bachelor’s degree from Canisius College.

Kendall recently co-chaired the first eBusiness Theme for DSI in San Francisco. He is one of the founders of the International Conference on Information Systems and is the past Chair of IFIP Working Group 8.2. He served as the functional MIS editor for Interfaces. He is an associate editor for the Decision Sciences journal, the Information Systems Journal, and the Information Resources Management Journal.

In 1994, the journal Socio-Economic Planning Sciences named Kendall among the top 60 most productive management information science (MIS) researchers in the world. His research focuses on studying push and pull technologies, ecommerce strategies, and developing new tools for systems analysis and design.

At the Rutgers University School of Business at Camden, Kendall coordinates the ecommerce and information technology area. He chaired the committee to establish a new curriculum for graduate and undergraduate studies in ecommerce, which launched in 2000. Kendall is the faculty advisor for the student Ecommerce and Information Technology Society at Rutgers-Camden.

He credits his students and colleagues at Rutgers-Camden with helping to advance his work. “My students helped me co-develop HyperCase, an interactive adventure game for learning systems analysis and design by being beta-testers and providing much valuable feedback, “ says Kendall.

“Furthermore, the Teaching Excellence Center at Rutgers-Camden has been invaluable in critiquing my teaching presentation, setting goals, and providing me with exciting new ways to unveil difficult subjects to students.”

Kendall’s co-author (and wife), Dr. Julie Kendall, is an associate professor of management at the Rutgers University School of Business at Camden. The duo currently is examining the strategic uses of Web presence and ecommerce for off-Broadway and southern New Jersey theatres and other nonprofit organizations in the service sector.
