Storms, Flooding Hit Region At least two funnel clouds were spotted in South Jersey as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the state Monday night. The funnel clouds were seen in Washington Township, Gloucester County and Waterford Township in Camden County, but there were no reports of touchdowns, according to Art Kraus, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

The storms brought anywhere from a half-inch to an inch of rain to central and southern New Jersey, Kraus said. Hail about the size of a golf ball was reported in Berkeley Township in Ocean County.

There also were reports of some street flooding and power outages.

About 1,500 customers in parts of Salem, Cumberland, Gloucester and Camden counties had experienced some interruption in service since 6 p.m., but less than 300 remained without power three hours later, said Conectiv spokeswoman Betty Kennedy.

The storms were much less severe in the northeastern part of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. About an inch of rain fell in most of that region, and there were no reports of heavy winds.

More storms were expected later Monday evening.

"There's still going to be some pretty good rains," Kraus said.

On Sunday evening, a storm packing heavy winds toppled a tree onto a home in Somerdale and downed branches near the border of Barrington and Runnemede.

The National Weather Service said the damage was caused by straight-line winds, which in severe thunderstorms can hit speeds of 60 mph.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were reported in Washington Township and gusts of 53 mph in Cape May.
