SJ Schools: Cherry Hill HS East

SJ Schools: Cherry Hill HS East Cherry Hill East (CHE) high hchool is an award-winning educational institution serving the Cherry Hill community. The school gained the prestigious Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award in 2002. They are also home of the 2002 State Champion Girls Tennis Team and the 2003 National Cheerleading Champions. The school also has an outstanding rate of college-bound students, with 99 percent of graduates choosing to continue their education. CHE serves more than 2,000 students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, with 15 percent speaking English as a second language.

CHE has received awards in several disciplines, thanks to the dedication and talent of its students. The literary magazine Demogorgan received First Place honors from the American Scholastic Press. The Business program received first place honors at regional and state DECA competitions, with ten students ranking as top-ten finalists in their individual categories.

The school offers honors, accelerated, and standard courses in a wide range of disciplines. The school also offers its students innovative programs including a Freshman English and World Civilization course that focuses on critical thinking through literature and history. The Research in Science Program is an after school program that allows students to research a problem in science. The independent study course allows students to participate in national science competitions. The peer helper’s course promotes positive relationships by dealing with problems through mediation, counseling, and referrals to professionals.

At CHE, more than 1,000 students participate in athletic programs and 1,500 students participate in extra-curricular programs. CHE students created an outstanding 2002-2003 school year earning several recognitions for their achievements. Congratulations to the following students:

The CHE production of Les Miserables was nominated for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical from the Paper Mill Playhouse. The production received 21 nominations--more than any school in the state. At the awards ceremony on June 10th, cast members will perform excerpts from the production. Three CHE performers received the honor to perform with the Broadway cast of Les Miserables on its closing night. Congratulations to Brittany Cohen, Cristin Milioti and R.J. Weaver for their commitment to the arts.

The winners were finally announces for the Mr. East competition. The winner and runners up are outstanding students with dedication to academics and extra-curricular activities and are positive role models. Mr. East for 2003 is Tony D’Auri. First place was Brian Cabalo and Second Place was a tie between Steve Goldberg and Jason Fox.

The Project 540 program is a national program that CHE students are dedicating themselves to. Through four sessions, students make lists of things they would like to change in their school, community, and country. Students are encouraged to understand that their one voice can affect the community and world.

The CHE Softball Team earned an outstanding victory over Egg Harbor Township last Tuesday in the opening round of the South Jersey Group 4 Tournament. Cathy Richter handed the defeat to the opponents when she hit a two-run double. After defeating Pennsauken, the CHE Cougars will advance to play Cherokee, currently ranked the number one team. Congratulations on their past wins, and go Cougars!

The CHE Project Kids Yellow Ribbon Club has been busy organizing a ‘Let it be known you’re never alone day.’ 800 East students that were identified as past and present helpers traced their hands and displayed them on the walls of the cafeterias. The group performs several in-school and community activities throughout the year to raise awareness about teen depression. Over the past year, the students have participated in the Teen Arts Festival by handing out information and yellow ribbon t-shirts to the community. The group attended Peer Leadership Training and also the Cherry Hill Public Schools Mental Health Prevention Committee. The students also interacted with parents at the ‘Living With and Understanding the Many Moods of Teenagers’ seminar and visited middle schools to speak with 8th graders about the transition from middle to high school. Congratulations to the success of this group’s endeavors and for raising awareness on this important topic.
