SJ Schools: Salem High School
The Salem County High School Academic League enjoyed a great competitive year in 2002-2003. They came away victorious in several matches against area high schools such as Penns Grove and Pennsville High School, where the team scored the season high of 80 points. The varsity team also defeated Salem County Vo-Tech Academy in a clenching match that finished 44 to 42.
The SHS BETA club spent a busy year helping local area organizations and school organizations. Their annual bake sale benefited the high school’s literary magazine, The Walnut Street Journal. The annual trivia tournament raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. All donations benefit research at the hospital. Students also participated in the March of Dimes ‘Walk America’ and raised more than $1000 for the organization.
The Salem Future Business Leaders of America competed at Mercer County College during the school year and placed in the top 8. Students tested in areas such as Business Math, Job Interviews and Business Communications. The top students were able to attend the state conference later in the year. Winners were Vianna B., Lauren C., Rion H., Andrew E., Laura N., and Laura P.
The Salem High School Student Government spent a very active year improving the school and community. With the hard work of officers Laura Newkirk, Allison Sullivan, Sheri Swanson and Jamie Covey along with other SGA members, the organization volunteered for the Arc of Salem County’s Annual Holiday Luncheon. Their efforts to provide meals to people with disabilities was appreciated by the organization and further displayed SGA’s active role in the community.
SGA also held a cell phone drive, where students and the community could donate outdated cell phones. The phones are then reprogrammed to only dial 911 and are given to those that cannot afford phones.
Another unique Salem County organization is the Student Movement against Cancer. The club participates in the Relay for Life, a 24-hour event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research. The club also created a Wall of Hearts, a free cancer awareness activity. Anyone can register the name of someone who has been affected by cancer and a heart will be placed on the wall in his or her name to recognize their courage. If you are interested in placing a name on the wall, you can contact landolfi@salemnj.org. The club also held a Care and Share Night to educate the community on cancer, with stories told by faculty, alumni, and a community member fighting breast cancer.
