South Jersey Football Games of the Week
With only two weeks left in the South Jersey high school football regular season, here are some of this week’s top games:
Friday
6 p.m. - Cherokee (5-1) at Kingsway (5-2).
These are two teams headed to the Group 5 playoffs. Cherokee is currently the No. 1 seed in Group 5, according to Gridironnewjersey.com and Kingsway is No. 10. Cherokee has won three in a row—all by shutout—since suffering a 3-0 loss at St. Augustine. Cherokee QB Ryan Bender has thrown for 349 yards and three TDS* and ran for 317 yards and seven scores. The Chiefs’ leading rusher, junior Murad Campfield, has gained 742 yards (6.2 avg.) and seven TDs. Kingsway has won two in a row since suffering a 41-13 loss to powerful Delsea. The Dragons are coming off last week’s 34-16 win over rival Clearview. Senior Benny Liles III has been the big-play performer for Kingsway with 36 receptions for 754 yards and 10 touchdowns.
6 p.m. - Cherry Hill East (3-4) at Cherry Hill West (1-6).
For many years this was the Thanksgiving Day game, but it has been staged the last few years in the regular season, as many Thanksgiving rivalries have done. West is coming off its first win of the year, last week’s 28-20 victory over Triton. The Lions led 28-0 at halftime. Hayden Baker had two short TD runs to lead West. East has won two in a row following last week’s 34-14 win at Princeton. Denzel Lee rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns to lead the winning effort. East will be looking for revenge after losing 54-13 last year to West.
6 p.m. - Camden Eastside (4-2) at St. Augustine (5-2).
Both teams will be competing in the postseason. Eastside is currently the No. 4 seeded South Group 3 team. St. Augustine is sixth in Non-Public A, the toughest Group in the state. Last week Eastside beat Burlington Township, 12-0. Eastside and St. Augustine have one common opponent—Shawnee. In its second game of the season, Eastside lost to Shawnee, 28-7, while St. Augustine beat Shawnee, 24-21. St. Augustine has won three in a row since suffering a 21-7 loss to Millville. The Hermits’ leading offensive player is junior running back Julian Turney, who has rushed for 720 yards (5.0 avg.) and nine touchdowns.
7 p.m. - Woodstown (5-1) at Haddonfield (5-1).
This features sectional title contenders, with Woodstown in Group 1 and Haddonfield in Group 2. Woodstown’s lone loss was 13-7 to fellow Group 1 contender Glassboro. The Wolverines have won two in a row following last week’s 27-21 win over defending Group 1 state champion Woodbury. Junior Bryce Belinfanti has rushed for 858 yards (7.7 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. Senior QB Max Webb has thrown for 407 yards and four TDs and rushed for 235 yards and five scores. Haddonfield is coming off its first loss, 20-7 last week to WJFL Constitution foe Camden.
