South Jersey Football Games of the Week
The NJSIAA high school football playoffs begin this week with South Jersey teams competing in both the South and Central Jersey portion sections of the playoffs. Teams need three wins to earn a sectional title.

The Non-Public pairings will come out on Oct. 29.

Here is a look at some of the top games this week involving South Jersey teams.

SJ Group 5

Friday, 7 p.m. - (5) Kingsway (5-4) at (4) Hunterdon Central (6-3).

Kingsway will attempt to snap a two-game losing streak, with losses  to quality teams, Cherokee and Holy Spirit. What’s interesting is that if Kingsway wins, it will likely face top seeded Cherokee in the second round. (Cherokee beat Kingsway 34-7 in the regular season). Kingsway has one of South Jersey’s best big-play performers in senior Benny Liles III. Liles has 49 receptions for 899 yards and 12 touchdowns. Hunterdon Central enters the postseason with a two-game winning streak. Senior Jakob Saus is the key offensive threat. He has rushed for 1,201 yards (6.1 avg.) and 14 touchdowns.

SJ Group 4

Friday, 7 p.m. - (5) Shawnee at (4) Middletown South (3-4), Friday, 7.

Disregard the records, both teams play difficult schedules, with Shawnee in South Jersey’s toughest conference, the West Jersey Football League American Division and Middletown in the Shore Conference American Division. Shawnee snapped a five-game losing streak with a 42-7 win last week over Williamstown. The Renegades have a strong dual-threat QB in senior Joe Papa, who has thrown for 1,278 yards and 12 TDs and run for 541 yards and nine touchdowns. Middletown South has lost two in a row, to quality Non-Public teams, Red Bank Catholic and Donovan Catholic, by a combined 14 points. Senior RB Colin Gallagher has rushed for 591 yards (6.6 avg.) and six scores.

CJ Group 1

Friday, 7 p.m. - (6) Keyport (8-1) at (3) Glassboro (5-3).

Keyport has won seven in a row since a 35-28 loss to Freehold Boro. The reason for a lower seed despite the 8-1 record is due to strength of schedule. Senior QB Nazir Treadwell has been a major dual threat for Keyport. He has thrown for 753 yards and 13 TDs and run for 1,235 yards (14.1 avg.) and 24 touchdowns. Glassboro must contain Treadwell to have a chance to win. The Bulldogs have won two in a row following last week’s 39-6 win over Buena. Sophomore Amari Sabb and freshman Xavier Sabb are two big-play performers for this young but talented Glassboro team.

CJ Group 4

Friday TBA - (5) Ocean City (3-5) at (4) Hammonton, (4-5).

At least both teams don’t have to do much scouting for this game. They just played this past weekend with Ocean City beating Hammonton, 24-21. Both teams have played difficult schedules, which is a major reason for their sub .500 records. Hammonton has played close games against good teams, including a 21-14 loss to 8-0 Timber Creek. Junior RB Kenny Smith is Hammonton’s leading threat. He has rushed for 1,227 yards (6.1 avg.) and 12 touchdowns. Against Hammonton, Ocean City RB Duke Guenther rushed for 146 yards and a TD on 29 carries. For the season he has rushed for 731 yards (4.6 avg.) and six touchdowns.
