To Be Remembered
The South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame inducted nine new members and one team as its newest class last month.
There is such a rich history of soccer excellence, and this class is a clear example.
Here are the new HOF members in alphabetical order:
Susie Cook, Haddonfield. A 1998 graduate, Cook was first-team all-conference all four years and was first-team All-South Jersey by the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association twice. In 1997 she was the Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier Post South Jersey Player of the Year. As a senior she helped Haddonfield win a state title. Also a track standout, she ran track at the University of Pennsylvania.
Kelly Breslin-Kozek, Shawnee. At Shawnee Breslin-Kozek was three-time first-team All-South Jersey selection and was a two-time first-team All-State choice by the New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association. In 2002 she was named the Courier Post Scholar Athlete of the Year. She then played at Villanova and earned Big East All-Academic honors all four years.
Darren Huck, Woodstown. This past year Huck became one of 24 coaches in South Jersey history to win 300 games. As the boys’ coach at Woodstown he has a 302-189-31 record. His teams have won five conference titles and qualified for the state tournament 22 seasons.
Interboro United 1983 Amateur League Team. Among the accomplishments, Interboro became the first South Jersey team to win the New Jersey State Men’s Tournament of Champions in 1983. The roster included eight current members of the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame.
Nick Junegert, Willngboro. Junegert was a successful player and coach. He was first-team All-South Jersey during his senior year at Willingbooro. As a men’s coach at Burlington County College, he had a 73-32-7. During his final season in 1996 he was named Junior College National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He served six seasons as a men’s assistant at Rider before taking over the women’s team at Stockton, with a career record of 272-126-60.
Ryan Kelly, Cherokee. Kelly was a first-team all-South Jersey and All-State selection for Cherokee. As a senior he was named an Adidas All-American and was a U.S. Men’s Under-18 and Under-20 National teams. He was a four-year college starter, for three seasons at Virginia and one at St. John’s. He played for the Columbus Crew of MLS in 2005, where he started five games before being forced to retire due to a career-ending knee injury.
Tom McGurk, media. McGurk has expertly covered soccer for more than 35 years with the Courier-Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily Journal of Vineland. He is currently sports editor of the Courier-Post and continues to cover soccer with the same passion displayed when he first got into the business.
Greg Ogden, coach. Ogden coached more than four decades at the high school and college level. He went 161-93-15 at Audubon, Mainland, Cinnaminson and Riverside and captured nine conference and four sectional titles. At Rutgers-Camden he was the women’s coach for one season and the men’s coach for seven, where his combined record was 83-47-16. Ogden was also a long-time club coach.
Geoff Starks, Willingboro. A 1988 graduate, he was a two-time first-team All-South Jersey selection and as a senior was an NSCAA Regional All-American. Starks was the South Jersey Soccer Coach’s Association Midfielder of the Year in 1986 and their Offensive Player of the Year in 1987.
Brian Udy, Woodstown. He played on Woodstown’s first ever team and when he graduated was the Wolverines’ all-time leader in goals and assists. He was part of the first teams to win a conference title and earn a state tournament berth. He then played for Radford University and at the time of graduation held the school all-time record for assists.
