EHT Grad Flukey Signs For Nearly $4 million With The Tigers

Coastal Carolina junior right-hander Cameron Flukey from Egg Harbor Township High was selected in the first round of the MLB draft last week, the No. 22 overall selection by the Detroit Tigers. Less than a week later, Flukey will begin his path toward the Major Leagues.

Jim Callis of MLB.com reported that the Flukey has agreed to a $3.8 million signing bonus with the Tigers. The slot value for the 22^nd pick was $4,082,700. Teams can go over or below the slot, but there are various penalties if they exceed by a certain amount their overall bonus pool that is assigned by MLB baseball.

Flukey might have been drafted even higher had he not suffered a rib injury right before the regular season this year. He missed the first two and a half months and made just seven starts. He was 0-2 with a 4.13 ERA but had 31 strikeouts in just 24 innings.

Shortly after being drafted in a conference call with reporters, Flukey said he physically felt fine. Sometimes college pitchers who had a big workload, don’t compete in the minor league immediately after signing. Flukey said he would do whatever the Tigers want him to, and since he had limited innings, it wouldn’t be surprising if he pitches this summer.

Either way, he made his mark as a sophomore at Coastal Carolina as it advanced to the College World Series before losing to LSU two-games-to-none.

As a sophomore, Flukey was 7-2 with a 3.19 ERA. Iin 101.1 innings he struck out 118 and walked 24.

In his final start of the season he went six innings, allowing just one run in a 1-0 loss to LSU. Throwing 101 pitches, he struck out nine against the hard-hitting national champions. That was the first game of the World Series and Coastal Carolina would be eliminated in the next game in a 5-3 loss.

That season he also struck out a season-high 11 six innings during a 6-0 victory over Old Dominion.

Flukey’s final collegiate game came in a 2-1 loss to Florida State in an NCAA regional matchup.

He was not involved in the decision, getting the start and allowing one run while striking out three in 3.1 innings.

Flukey’s fastball reached as high as 99 miles per hour this year.

A dominant force at EHT, Flukey was 6-2 with a 0.45 ERA during his senior season. He struck out 83 in 45.2 innings.

Flukey’s final appearance representing EHT came after the season in the Carpenter Cup when he pitched three shutout innings in the Tri-Cape’s opening 7-4 win over Lehigh Valley in 2023.

After that, Flukey headed to Arizona to participate in the MLB combine, an event he participated in this year as well.

He obviously showed at this year’s combine that his injury was a thing of the past and now so is his amateur status as he begins to climb the MLB ladder.
