Another Year Of Pure Dominance For Glassboro Football
When Glassboro beat Cedar Grove, 29-14 in the state Group 1 football championship, it marked the closest game the Bulldogs had all year.
That shows how dominating Glassboro was in going 14-0 and increasing its two-year winning streak to 27 games. It was the second straight year that Glassboro beat Cedar Grove in the state final.
This was only the fourth year that the NJSIAA has held state championships for public schools. Glassboro has not only won two state titles, but also appeared in the 2023 state championship game, losing 24-6 to Mountain Lakes.
That turned out to be the last loss that the Bulldogs have suffered.
Glassboro had its most challenging games in the beginning and the end.
The season opened with a 36-20 win over eventual South Jersey Group 2 champion Haddonfield in the Battle at the Beach game at Rowan University, across the street from Glassboro High.
Every other win was by 28 or more points.
Coach Timmy Breaker, who won two South Jersey Group 1 titles as a player at Glassboro, just completed his third season guiding the Bulldogs.
His record is 36-4, with two state titles, three sectional championships and two West Jersey Football League Diamond Division titles.
Glassboro outscored teams 621-76.
There were so many explosive players, led by the Sabb brothers, Amari, a senior, and Xavier, a junior.
Amari Sabb rushed for 823 yards, an astonishing 12.6 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 53 passes for 916 yards and another 12 touchdowns. He also returned five kickoffs for 192 yards and a touchdown. Sabb also intercepted a team-high six passes, completing one of the best single-seasons in South Jersey history.
In the state final he caught four passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 78 yards on 12 carries. He also had one interception and one forced fumble.
Xavier Sabb is listed among the top juniors in the country. He only carried the ball twice, but scored two touchdowns totaling 19 yards. An explosive receiver, Xavier Sabb had 59 receptions for 896 yards and 13 touchdowns. He intercepted four passes and returned five kickoffs for 154 yards and a touchdown and nine punts for 178 yards and a score. For good measure, he also completed the only pass he threw for a 71-yard touchdown.
Junior JoJo DeLeece rushed for 1,005 yards and 14 touchdowns. Sophomore Mekhi Parker had 39 receptions for 884 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Jack O’Connell threw for 2,737 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Senior Brandon Simmons was an insane pass rusher, totaling 30 sacks. Junior Maurice Davis added 16 sacks.
The All-conference performers were both Sabbs, O’Connell, Parker, DeLeece, senior offensive lineman Jayce Grays, junior offensive lineman Amon Wright, Simmons, junior linebackers Ta’sheem Butler and Davon Barr, and senior Junior Serrano, who was named as an athlete.
The Bulldogs combined explosive athleticism with toughness and intelligence, adding up to the second straight unbeaten and dominating team.
